I hate computers
« on: December 28, 2005, 11:38:49 AM »
I went to PC World with my dad yesterday because he wanted to upgrade his PC. We bought a new motherboard, an Athlon 64 bit processor, and 1Gb of DDR400 RAM, a new PSU and a PCI Express graphics card. I've got the machine booting, but it's using the 32 bit version of Windows.

If I try to boot it using the XP 64 bit installation disc, the installer freezes saying "Setup is starting Windows".

I got a floppy disk with the nForce ATA drivers on it. I tried getting Windows Setup to load the driver, but got an error that the driver is not compatible with the 64 bit version of Windows.

So I have bought a motherboard that supports a 64 bit processor, but doesn't have any drivers for a 64 bit operating system?!?!?!

Computers are sh!t.

Hey, computers are good!

Micro$$$oft is sh!t! Driver support for the 64-bit version of Windoze XP is abysmal...

Do yourself a favour and grab the 64-bit version of Ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com - this is a great OS and will be capable of carrying out most people's requirements.

Then, once Microsoft sorts itself out and actually gets a stable and supported 64-bit OS, you can dual boot that alongside Ubuntu.

My dad won't want Linux installed unfortunately. I tried to convince him to get a Mac Mini instead of upgrading his PC, but he wouldn't go for it :-( So what am I supposed to do until the driver support for XP x64 improves, just continue using the 32 bit version? Then what's the point of shelling out for a 64 bit processor???!!!

Microsoft is a bit behind in its 64-bit support!

But having said that, the Athlon 64 runs 32-bit stuff well, so you'll be fine with the 32-bit XP.

I also have an Athlon 64 and it dual-boots into either the 32-bit version of Windoze XP or the 64-bit Ubuntu Linux.

It is a bit odd, having a 64-bit CPU and not being able to make the most of it from within Windows...

Does 32 bit software run inside an emulator, like when you run old 16 bit software and it has to run inside NTVDM? Or does it run natively on the 64 bit processor?

The machine doesn't seem significantly faster with the new proc and RAM. I thought this was because I was using a 32bit OS on a 64bit proc.

Hi,
Yes it emulates 32bit. It's called WoW (Windows on Windows).
I actually went back to 32bit XP because of the lack of driver support. I think I'll wait until Vista is out as the driver support is apparently better.
If you really want to install 64bit then I would say back up all your old stuff, reformat and install from the CD.

That would be correct, as it need the 64bit extensions. They still hold their own in the 32bit applications though.

Thanks a lot guys. I think I'll reinstall the 32 bit version of XP and forget about 64 bit for now. To be honest, the machine will probably be a lot faster after I clear off all his crap and start fresh

I also posted about this on a Microsoft forum for Windows XP. Guess how many responses I have had? :-P

You stated that you have to buy a 64bit processor compatible mobo? Have you bought a athlon64 and not a suitable board for it?.
On the other end, on an atlhon 64, the difference on speed respect 32 bit version of xp is abysmal, so get firts all the drivers needed for the 64 bit, and then install it. There is no reason for keeping the 32 bit xp if you have a athlon 64.
I had made tests on a friends 64(mine is 32) and the differences in performance are noticeable.
Also, as said by another mate on this thread, you can go the linux way, there is few linux distros that had go the 64 bit route too.

hm... what can i say... you should have asked me first... YES! COMPUTERS SUCK! but i am surprised that it took you so long to get it.

i am in business for about 20 years now and since the old days there's one obvious path... and its leading down

i am happy about every day i do not get in contact with computers.

as stated in 'interests' of my accont: my interests are everything BUT computers

so don't act as you were surprised... computers suck, and they suck since decades... nothing new there... and if windows is involved they suck even more (although no bsd or linux can take away that fact... they just suck 'not as much' with unix/linux, but they still suck)

so ask me first next time ;)

i know, this post don't help you, but it HAS to be said

A1200HD, Apollo/060/32MB, 80 GB HD, D-Box Tower, Voodoo3, USB - A600HD 6MB Ram, 40 MB HD - \\\'Windows Free Life\\\'(tm) since 1995

No I'm sorry, you're all wrong. There is no solution to this problem. Computers are just crap.
