How to get a Cyberstorm MK2 060 to work in an A3000 desktop ???
« on: December 27, 2005, 12:30:13 PM »
This may probably be an old question, but I don´t know how to get a Cyberstorm MK2 060 without scsi to work in my A3000. The A3000 has always worked without changing any jumpers, just using the 68030 and co-processor, so it´s the first time it gets a turboboard inside. I looked at AmigaHardwareDatabase but no discription of jumpers, and the Big Book is still down  :boohoo: What I did get is a bunch of coloured bars on the screen when I turn the power on but after that I get a light grey screen but no kickstart screen. There do not seem to be any kickstart roms inside as the computer has to load its kickstart at bootup in the Devs directory. I disconnected the scsi cable from the motherboard so now only the floppy is connected and there are also no Zorro cards connected. That´s the situation now. Can somebody who is more intelligent than me please help me out  :-? Shouldn´t be that difficult

No roms inside?? Strange...

Anyway, apart from the jumper settings, 040/060 cards require roms 3.0 or 3.1 IIRC to work. (Wont work with superkickstart images)
Anyway is the only way

you might need to do the _int2 hack on your A3000D

nex4060 : the modification is only needed when using scsi on the Cyberstorm and that module is not connected ..

X-ray : thank you for your offer but I already have the real manual but it doesn´t help me out ...

MrZammler : "Anyway, apart from the jumper settings, 040/060 cards require roms 3.0 or 3.1 IIRC to work. (Wont work with superkickstart images)" ... true, there is no kickstart rom inside, though the computer boots up with kickstart 3.1 (V40) in its memory. I found out that this rom-file is placed in the Devs directory and it seems to load that automaticly without an extra line in the startup-sequence. May this be the problem ?? As I said before, I do see the coloured bars that are typical for the Cyberstorm, so I thought I was doing well, but I didn´t get any further than that ... if it is so that I do need a real kickstart rom (there is an empty space on the motherboard for two roms) then this may mean that the card does work but that my A3000 is not yet up to it :-) Please correct me if I´m wrong   :-o

Have you checked the serial nr on the card so it isn't affected by the DMA bug?

Yes, you need to get yourself a pair of Kickstart ROMS for the A3000. I had to do the same when I bought my 040 card. You should go for 3.1 ROMS.

Seems like those Roms need to be soldered on the motherboard which is not exactly my greatest hobby ...

All of the A3000's came with superkickstart roms. Those could load the real kickstart from Devs, chosen with a menu similar to the early-startup.

To use anything else besides the onboard 030, you need to have real, hardware roms. Get a pair of 3.1 (i dont think they are soldered, never came across something like that) and install you cyberstorm.
Anyway is the only way

No soldering of ROMs is required on ANY Amiga!  Check to see if you have a ROM tower or not.  But in any case you need a set of 3.1 ROMs, 3.0 never was released for the A3000.

So I just have to remove the superkickstart chips and replace them by A3000 3.1 chips ??? That easy ??? No soldering ??? There ARE two empty places which have the label Rom on them ...

@Effy

Yes.  No soldering is needed.  Simply remove the bootstrap ROMs and replace with new Kickstart ROMs.  If you have a ROM tower then you have to remove the ROM tower or get ROMs that are designed for use on the ROM tower.  (The ROM tower is just a circuit board that plugs into the other set of sockets, the ROM chips are on the underside).
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

the reason real roms are needed is that the 1.4 rom on the motherboard loads the rom image from your hard drive using cpu routines that only work on a 68030 chip. a 68040 or 68060 that attempts to use those routines will crash. nothing will be displayed as error message.
3.1 rom are increadably easy to install and usually cost around 35 USD. softwarehut  www.softhut.com has them in stock. check in online catalog-operating systems and emulators-os3.1
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,

BTW most a3000d's wont boot without some scsi drive connected because the onboard termination on many of the motherboards is set wrong.

oh another BTW dont do the _int2 patch unless you have to. that patch is only to allow cpu boards WITH scsi to operate because the a3000d cpu slot doesnt have the _int2 line that is needed to enable the scsi dma channel. a3000ts and 4000s and 4000ts have this line. 3000ds do not but most cpu cards without scsi will work perfectly without the patch.
