Problem partitioning compact flash card in IDE interface
« on: December 22, 2005, 08:00:36 PM »
My CF->IDE interface has arrived, and I am trying to partition it under 3.9. I connected the device with a 512Mb card in it and booted. The flash card is seen by HDToolBox, so I installed an RDB. I then created a partition (HD2) the full size of the card, using FFS. I saved the changes and rebooted. On the next boot, there is no HD2 icon on the Workbench. Check in HDToolBox, and the partition is still there. Reboot and check the early startup screen, and there is no HD2 there. Any thoughts?

You could try formatting the partition.

Code: [Select]
Format DRIVE HD2: NAME Foobar QUICK

I tried that, but got an error (can't remember what, but something like an invalid device).

I'll try it, but I'm not sure it will make any difference as the drive is actually being seen by HDToolBox.

Ok, I removed the jumper from the flash card reader which set it to master. Powered on and went to the early boot menu, and sure enough there was the partition I created on the flash card! Unfortunately, this caused a conflict with my hard drive so the partitions on that didn't show up.

So the problem appeared to be either that the flash reader didn't like functioning as a slave, or that it wants to be the only device on the IDE channel. So I disconnected my hard drive and set the flash reader to slave, and the partitions still didn't show up.

I think I'm going to get a 4-way IDE interface and try the flash drive on its own channel. I need to do this anyway as I have 3 IDE devices and had to disconnect my CD-ROM to connect the flash drive.
