Networking Amiga 2 Winblows

I finally got my Amiga on-line through my Router...


...now how do I network it with my PC so I can trade files?

Now to answer your question... SAMBA... good luck though... even the most experienced users can't always get SAMBA configured correctly.

By the way, how did you get it to work through your router?

On my A4000, about a year before she died... I had internet setup on it connected to my router, and if I remember correctly, I set the Gateway to my Router, set the IP to static (whatever the next X.X.X.### is assigned), and ummm the rest I forget. :oops:

So please, do refresh my memory kind sir. :-D

Well I'm on a 1200 with an 030, OS 3.9, so what do I need to download?

 As for getting my stuff working I gave it a static IP outside the range that my router distributes, in this case it was:

192.168.1.98

netmask

255.255.255.0

the gateway you can get by typing

ipconfig/all

in a dos promt under XP or 2k

once you got that, type it in, then call your ISP for your DNS #, add that in, and you should be all set to go.

It all basically breaks down to what numbers your router spits out.

Samba is one option as Invisix said. The easiest option for simple file transfer is Amiga Explorer from Cloanto.

It works great with tcp/ip(with serial nullmodem too, but it's slowslowslow).
-Go online with genesis
-Start Aexplorer on the amiga(it should autodetect tcpip connection)
-Start Aexplorer on the pc and then a window opens on the pc that gives you access to all drives on the amiga.

If all you need to do is shuffle around some files, another easy option I'm fond of is FTP.  There are any number of free FTP servers for Windows.  And a few free FTP clients for Amiga.    Combine the two, and it's simple file transfers without the hours of headaches caused by the rather incomplete Amiga SAMBA implementation.  (Or the headaches caused by the rather incomplete file sharing and security model on Win XP home, for that matter...)

Hmmm... I actually go the other way... FTP server on the Amiga and the FPT client in Windows XP. It sucks, but it works :-)

As for hte router, I have mine set to pick up a dynamic IP, static gateway set to the router though, and have it set to use the router's address as DNS. Works fine, setting the DNS numbers to my ISP's resulted in DNS errors...

I supposed I could use FTP, the files are pretty small.

Ok, I won't worry about it till I get a new Amiga.
