Another PD game request!
« on: December 20, 2005, 12:13:20 PM »
Ages (years) ago there was a non-playable demo of a game in progress on Aminet. It was a space battle kind of affair, and the author claimed it was the most advanced game of its kind at the time. I never got it to run, but was very intrigued by it.

I seem to remember that in the readme for the game, there was something about "what would happen if I ran the demo on 2 Amigas and pointed the screens at each other" and the answer he gave was that it would open a portal to another dimension

That's all I know about the game as I never actually played it, and can't remember anything else. Anyone have any idea?

I remember a few years ago (probably circa 1997/98/99) there were several space type games that were supposed to be very advanced.

Lambda which was a Freespace type game, it got to a stage where the author released a kind of alpha release, where the engine was working but you couldn't really do anything. The graphics were top with absolutely amazing lighting effects even on a 8mb 030/50 AGA system. It's a shame that one never took off. I got that one off Aminet.

Then there was the massive game that never took off even though there was a massive international effort. Explorer 2260, god that game looked like the new Elite and I loved reading CU Amiga detailing the progress of this game. It's a real shame that that never took off as there aren't too many decent 1st person perspective space fight/trade simulators out there, especially one of this magnitude.

Oh and one final game that had potential but didn't see the light of day - Golem. If anyone ever managed to get their hands on that aside from the fact that you didn't have much control how much of a graphic orgy was that game?

Hmmm it might have been Lambda. I never actually saw screenshots so I can tell if it is the same one.

Don't get us started on unreleased games...
(Putty Squad mumble mumble...)

Yeah, Lambda had some serious potential. Graphically it was good, if offered a tonne of potential and beat most the space shooter sims we had at the time.

I showed a few people the Lambda engine and introduced them to other 'works in progress' and some of them latched back onto the Amiga, until nothing came out.

I always liked seeing developed games that pushed the boundries of what the Amiga could do. As I said, Lambda really showed the potential of my 030/50 AGA set up. Nothing special as a system goes, but that game put shame to some of the software on my then P3 450.

Putty squad - damn there was a game I wish was released, but then that list could go on forever...

I managed to find a SNES ROM image of Putty Squad to play in an emulator. I don't really feel bad about downloading it, as I preordered it from Alive Mediasoft and paid, but never got the game.

It was a really good game, and I did complete it. I just wish I could play it on my Amiga. As I understand it, the game was finished, but never released. There must be a copy somewhere?
