Performance browsers in Shapeshifter
« on: December 14, 2005, 06:54:40 PM »
I've got Shapeshifter running on my machine with System 7.5.5 on a dedicated partition. Simcity 2000 works like charm and Doom II runs with +/-12 fps. I guess that's ok for my specs.

But the browsers are slow, really slow. I tried Netscape 4.03, 4.05 and Internet Explorer 4.01. Ibrowse on the Amiga is a lot faster. Is this normal or can I try some optimizations?

I use the built in TCP/IP config from System 7.5.5. Could that be a problem? Also unstuffing files with StuffIt Expander takes a long time; even for files of a few MBs.

@Flashlab:

The more recent versions of StuffIt Expander are ridiculously slow. Also both Netscape and Internet Explorer are no speed-demons compared to IBrowse.

I also found NS to run incredibly slow, I remember watching as it tiled in a background pattern on a particular web-page.

I guess I'll try downgrading to an even lower version of NS or IE.

You have the answer. I used to use Netscape 3.04 with OS 7.5.5 and it worked really well. Version 4.02 and 4.03 are a bit new for that OS. You can probably still find it at Netscape.com in their archives. Any version 3.x will work well. Mac browsers don't run as fast as what you're accustomed to but they do ok. If you have enough ram you can create a ram disk (in the memory control panel) and set Netscape's cache to that. That way you'll be caching to ram instead of writing to HD.

Yeah, I'm new here  ;-) :-)
Glad to be here.

Oh, almost forgot. In Mac Classic it's very important to allocate more memory to your apps. Browsers need lots of memory. I would increase the memory allocated to Netscape by at least 100%. Normal apps...increase 20% or more.

To allocate more memory to an application:

1. click once on the programs icon (not an alias) to highlight it.

2. go to one of the pull down menus on the desktop and find "Get Info".

3. Increase the number in the "Preferred Size" window by 20 to 100 percent or more.

If you allocate at least 20% more memory to all your apps, everything will run much better and your machine will be more stable.

PM me if you have further Mac questions.

Try iCab.  http://www.icab.de/

It's usable on lower end machines (I use it on my Color Classic 040/33MHz)
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(
