My Amiga 500 is the only computer I use at home. I use it mainly for internet, email, games, music (mods & mp3), converting images, Mac/Atari emulation and text documents. I have used it occasionally for sending/receiving faxes, creating PDFs, 3D rendering and messaging.

I used to use it for printing documents and images, but I got sick of waiting for half an hour per page (damn Turboprint!) and stupid faulty ink cartridges.

Hey, another Amiga user that likes classical music? I've got about 1Gb of converted (from my CDs) Bach, Vivaldi and Handel music on my Amiga.

I work at the Toronto international airport control tower and we use Amigas basically for everything that involves getting the planes safely up or down. Frankly speaking, I don't think that PCs would ever be up for such a responsible and demanding job. They have been running reliably for the past 20 years since we originally implemented the "Amiga in the workplace" solution.

We are still using mostly Amiga 2000 units with 2.0 roms and are hoping to upgrade to 3.1 roms/OS3.9 some day, however our development department is still reluctant to recommend and push a safe migration, as software compatibility might pose a problem. After all, it is an airport and all systems must be 100% funtional, all the time.

We are constantly upgrading the workplace with new units, and for parts and systems we mostly go to eBay.

It's a wonderful place to work at! I wouldn't trade my job for anything in the world.

You've got to be joking. Amiga 2000s with 2.0 in the Toronto international control tower??

If you're not joking, all I can say is "Holy {bleep}!".

Do bears go in the woods and isn't it great that stuff doesn't stick to rabbit fur?

Hey, if the planes land and take off safely, good for Amiga. Dave Hayne would be proud. Is there an article about that? If not, someone should write one!!! Send in some pictures!

play classical music
That much! That wouldn't be too bad to have on my HD. :-) What format do you play them in? I have one Bach song that I transcribed on Deluxe Music Construction Set.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

I use my A1200 for WHDLoad games mostly. I also use YAM to send the odd mail if I'm already on my Amiga when I need to send one (normally I would use my iBook). Unfortunately I find surfing quite painful on my 040/33. Hopefully I will be able to upgrade to something faster at a later date.

:-o i am sorry to say this, and maybe it will upset some amigians, but: oh my god! i won't ever fly to toronto

amiga is a cool computer, i use it for playing games, browsing the internet (sometimes) and working from home via ssh.... but.... it crashes about every hour :( i would never trust it to do some REALLY important tasks.

i like the amiga and i am working towards my own nirvana - which is throwing away my pc and making the amiga my only computer (besides the c64), but amiga is f***ing unstable... this is a fact that remains and should prevent everyone from using amigas in critical environments... maybe a2000 with 2.x roms are better, but my os3.9 box crashes a lot of times every day

Mine isn't. Why don't you look at solving the problem before blaming the Amiga?

my amiga also does not crash, as long as i just do things that i know won't crash it, like playing games through whdload (like you told) or so.

it depends on the programs you are using. if the program does something wrong, it crashes the whole computer, no good base for running a computer in critical environment.

You're telling me that your Amiga is stable as long as you don't run software that is unstable and crashes it, right? So it's the software, not the Amiga, that is unstable. I'm sure that Toronto airport have thoroughly tested their Amigas and the software they use if they are being used for air traffic control. The fact that they have been running for 20 years speaks volumes for the stability of both the software they are using and the Amigas themselves.

@motorollin:

Oh that was just me talking out of my arse. :-)

I was being sarcastic at all the folks out there that go around and show and tell about how Amiga still makes a difference nowadays by being professionally used over other more modern and readily available solutions. It was pure b*llsh*t and nothing more. :-D

You're cruel, cruel I tells ya  :ak47:

Still, I stick by my argument that AmigaOS is *not* unstable. There is just a lot of crappy software written for it that causes it to become unstable (as there is on every other OS on the planet). There is also a lot of very high quality software that will run with no problems.
