New Harddisk in A600 to play games.
« on: December 05, 2005, 08:59:40 AM »
Since yesterday i've got my own A600HD whit a 45 MB harddisk. (JOY) Now i have an old 800MB harddisk and wat to install that. So far so good. But how do i reinstall the OS? OS 2 is installed on that one. Now i only got 1.3, 3.0 and 3.1. I cannot install OS 3.0 on an A600, can i?

Than i want to copy my game disks on the harddisk. Hear someone talking about HDload (or something like that) and also that i need more ram to use it. (Think that this A600 is compleet standard, whitout eny extention).

What can i do?

What version of Kickstart do you have installed in your A600?

I'm not sure what the kickstart version numbers mean, perhaps somebody else can translate. Alternatively on the purple kickstart screen (if you have no hard drive connected and no disk in the floppy drive) it will tell you the version, i.e. 2.01, 3.0 etc.

If you have 2.01 then you have to install Workbench 2.

As for WHDLoad, you can download it from Aminet and it will allow you to install your floppy games to your hard disk. You will need some additional fast ram installed for it to work properly.

To find out what version of Kickstart and Workbench are on your A600 have a look at this website. Workbench Nostalgia
Latest version of WHDLoad can be found here.

AFAIK, you can, but it probably won't fit on single floppy. use LHA to compress it and split it on 880Kb pieces (IIRC it can split). You do have bootable floppy with for eg. hdinsttools, right? then just copy some basic commands to that floppy like LHA, copy, dir.
try everything before removing old HDD..

when using Lha, set these switches
-a -r -e -x -wsys:
and the one for splitting, cant remember it..
Better sorry than worry.

LHA is long ago i used that one. This i'm going to search a 2.1 install disk set. What's the biggest HD size 2.1 can use.

you got an a600 for games? hmmm not a good choise IMHO...

you should have gotten an a1200 for games for these reasons:

1. it has the newer AGA chipset
2. it comes with a 020 as standar, and a 030 accel is cheap, so you could enjoy games. remember that for whdload it is reccommended to have a 030 + MMU + fastram for precash.
you cannot use the quit key in a 68000 cpu, you need at least a 68010 for it to work, meaning that after loading a game if you want to end it, you must reboot...
3. all expansion cards are cheaper and more common than the ones for a600

I am sorry to dissapoint you, but if you only want to play games and you have no sentimental reasons towards the a600, go buy an A1200 and save yourself a lot of trouble...
ofcourse, this is just my 2c, but I think all others will agree with me

@ keropi

LOL, but great words of advice! My first ever Amiga was a A600 with 1 meg expansion memory and ext floppy drive.I used to sit for hours playing cannon fodder, swos, sim city and  Zool. But then came the day I got offered an A1200 which meant I could now take advantage of the AGA chipset for games and I was'nt dissapointed. The 1200 does everything I want it to do and I've never felt the need to upgrade to an A4000 as I've spent one or two quid  on upgrading the A1200. So as keropi says buy yourself an A1200 if you can afford it, but if you can't then the A600 isnt a bad of a machine. its just kind left back in time compaired to the A1200 and A4000.

Thats my 2 penny's :-)
Specs:
A1200PT, mediator c/w voodoo 3 2000, sb128, 60G HDD,OS3.9,LITEON CDR, nec 4x4 changer,External Scan Doubler,Cocolino adapter,PS2 keyboard adaptor.

Morphos 2.6, mini mac g4 @ 1.25ghz.

Hmmmm.... A1200 has Rom 3.0 isit? So i can use Workbench 3.0, do i?

I'm still searching for an A1200. I just want to play old A500 Games so i thought an A600HD is enough. Someone interested in an A600HD???   Also got 8 A500 here

1200's come with 3.0 or 3.1 roms... prefer to get one with the 3.1 roms, that will allow you to run OS3.9... ofcourse with a blizzard accelerator you could softkick a 3.0 machine to 3.1 ...
the a600 will work with those old games, but you will have the limitations I described above, no quit key, no precache...

@Roman78: i had the same dilemma back a month ago

I restored a very old Amiga 600, just to play games. Even tough i know 1200 have better graphics and 020 and all that, i just wanted to have a small machine, with a "big hardisk" inside, with plenty of old games (non aga, of course)

I was visiting Greg Donner excellent site (Wokbench nostalgia), and found about people complaining that they couldnt use larger hdd with Kickstart 37.300
Let me tell you, i have done it with no problems!!
I have a 2 GB disk (4 partitions), FULL of WHDLOAD games, and i installed Workbench 2.1 with no problems!!

If you need more advice, just PM and i will tell you how to achieve this!!

Its lovely to put your 600 in a bag, and go to a friends house, for a saturday night, peanuts, lot of beer, and a truly retro-gaming experience...

 :-D

Cheers!

Rebooting after playing is no problem i think. It's reboot fast, faster than my Dual G4 1,25 or my XP2400+.

I think 800 Mb must work. Only problem i have now is that i need more memory. And a workbench. I found one 2.05 for € 5,- Hope he stil has it. New and still sealed.

I will pm you when it's not working :D

All aga games released were released also for ecs/ocs, only a few didn't, but these games were the later ones and were also in the pc, so not getting aga for gaming shouldn't be a issue.
All the classics are playable even in an expanded a500.
The a600 is a cool Amiga so if i were you i won't throw it away.
