Question for Amiga.org Network "Gurus"
« on: April 03, 2003, 11:52:09 AM »
Ok...can anyone here please verify if I'm
off my rocker?

Let's say a house has two computers, each in
a different room at opposite ends of the
house. Each computer has it's own DSL modem
hooked up, and each is being served with
separate static IP's from the same ISP.

Is this possible??? I don't see why not...I
understand the use of hubs/routers/etc but
is there any technical or physical barrier to
the above scenario?

Thanks for any input...:)

The two PC's would not be able to access the Internet at the same time. Also if both DSL modems were powered up, neither of them would be able to connect:-(

If only one PC was ever powered up at a time, the set up mentioned above would work fine :-)

Thanks Radfoo. Damn...that  means I have to
route cable all over the house. We have 2
modems so I was hoping for an easy way
out. :)

It will probably costs more, but maybe a wireless LAN would be an option you could look into.

Wireless networking is not an option for the Amiga as the network PCI cards i have been looking at don't have a supported controller card.

If you are using PC's then its easy.

ASDL modem into a wireless router.
Wireless network card in each PC.
Would at current UK prices set you back around £180 but stuff is cheaper in the states anyway.
Anymore than three conversations (2 pcs and a router) and your going to need a wireless access point.
This way you only need one cable connection and you can have a network as well.

Ethernet cables are generally optional on wireless routers. He could use a cable for the Amiga, and wireless for the PCs.

Thanks everybody for the advice. I'll probably
end up routing some wire...or maybe we'll
switch to cable...for what we're paying for DSL
(a weak 380k) it seems we could get 1.5mbps
with our cable provider.

For an Amiga with an Ethernet card I think it should be possible to use one of the wireless Ethernet bridges that have come on to the market recently like this one from DLink.

These allow any Ethernet device (such as a network printer) to be attached to a wireless network without any specific software so I can't see any reason why they wouldn't work on an Amiga.

If you have two telephone lines (two telephone numbers I mean) I don`t see were the problem could be. (but I suppose you don`t)

Other possibilities include HomePNA (phoneline networking),  the unrelated-competing HomePlug (powerline networking), or 10baseT ethernet running on existing unused phoneline pairs (if there're any available).

I've become something of a HomePNA guru, so to keep it short, I'd say something like 2Wire HomePortal or Linksys HPRO200, plus a Netgear PE102 per-machine, or per-room if you add an ethernet hub.

What provider are you with?  Some actually give you a *discount* on home networking equipment!

If the ISP allows two different IPs (per username f.e.) then there is no problem .

I think you would need two actual wires down to the telephone station, since the dsl-modem uses the bandwidth above the telephone >4000Hz. The phone use the 300-4000Hz, and the dsl-modem use the frequencies above to transport analog data down to the telephone station where it goes digital on "to da' net".

I would buy a ADSL Router/Ethernet modem, i'm using one at the moment on my PC & A4000T & Laptop.

I have 1 internet connection, the ADSL router is configured with DHCP and allocates each connected computer with an IP address and DNS.
This way you can all be on the interent at the same time and all on one connection.

As for speed, i have found since moving over to an ASDL/Ethernet Router my connection is faster regardless if all machines are being used.

Obviously you can use wireless connectivity as the combined ADSL/Ethernet/Router (this is one box im talking about which cost around £80) has 4 hub ports as well.

I have noticed that my friend's cable system seems faster than my DSL setup, but, on cable you can't run servers and often you can't get static IPs either, unless you do NAT and have a subnet in your house, just an FYI.

And about the only companies that outdo the phone companies for lousy service and price gouging are, you guessed it, cable companies.  Which is another reason why I'll never use them.

That's the exact case. Each computer would have
it's own (different) static IP address from the
provider.
