Is it true...
« on: November 30, 2005, 09:45:09 PM »
that if I were to join Greenpeace or a civil rights organisation, e.g. Amnesty International, I could be refused entry to the US on those grounds?

I wasn't sure if it was the kind of thing I just heard 'down the pub' or if it was true.

I was asking it as a straight-up question, rather than trying to provoke a debate. I was thinking of joining a human rights organisation, but want to visit the USA at some point in the future...

Shame if that is the case. I don't think it is but wouldn't be entirely surprised to be proved wrong.

Can't the organisation in question answer this question?

greenpeace yes i believe it is true since some of their protests can be classified as terrorism (maybe not intended to be tho) the others i dunno.
The only stupid question is a question not asked.

@Eyso:

Well, apparently some of their tactics for recruiting new donators are a little underhand.
Nothing major or illegal but enough to stop her participating.
She still supports about 99% of what they do, I think.

Members of Greenpeace, etc are not banned from entering the US.   Greenpeace used to have noble goals, and I'm all for their return to block the whalers in the antarctic, however when you start trying to steal captive born dolphins and sea lions to free them into the wild, you have to realize they arent that well balanced group.  But any group which the French government sends its spies to sink there boat can't be all bad.

One thing I know it that the in Australia, the government funds them.

Great! They then turn their backs on the gov. and start vandalizing (sp?) {bleep} and causing havoc.

I'm no greeny, but there are better organizations.

Don't forget the French government being behind the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior.  Kicked up an almighty Gaullic diplomatic stink that one.

I don't agree with their radicalism, but given the choice between environmentally neutral (I hate the term "environmentally friendly".  What's eco friendly about underarm deodorant?) or damaging the environment, I always try and err to the former.

I do agree with certain 'radicalism'. That word can (and will) be abused, y'know.

I used to be a Greenpeace member however I also became a bit disillusioned in them. Their tactics don't always entail telling the truth, but however often are filled with plain lies and propaganda. Not that propaganda is bad, but it should at least be factual.

For example remember the Brent Spar catastrophe? Greenpeace claimed the thing was filled to the brim with toxins, turned out it was clean as a whistle.

And of course there's the whole seal issue in the eighties. Greenpeace verociously battled against the sealhunt. In the process the Greenlanders lost their livelihood even though there were still about 4 million individuals of the species of seal they hunted. 'But they're so cute!' Bah....

I've turned back to the WWF, of which I was already a member as a young boy =).
