How to get A4000/30 Ethernet?
« on: April 03, 2003, 11:12:21 AM »
Hi..I own a A4000/30 and I would like to hook it up with my pc's.
Can I use a (pc) ISA NE2000 -compatible?
If so, do I need drivers (ofcourse : ) and where do I get them?
If not, what are my other options?

ISA slots aren't active by default. You need some sort of bridgeboard to activate them... like GoldenGate or some hardware PC-emulator. Then you could use ne2k compatible isa-card, but that isn't necessarily the best solution.

Better way is to get some Zorro card, like X-surf, Ariadne 1 or 2, Hydra or some Commodore's network card. X-surf and Ariadne2 are the latest and recommendable. Older ones might have some problems like with Hydra's Amiganet 1.1, which need little hardware modification to get it work on A4k...

Hi Triar,

on the PC side you'll need any ethernet card working under your operating system.

On your Amiga, there are several options. One of them is getting a HIGHWAY (if there's still one available) or an ALGOR USB controller together with the NORWAY networking module. So you can use ethernet for networking (AmiTCP or any other Amiga OS TCP/IP stack is needed), or you can use USB devices like flashcard reader for data transfers.

Or you take a simple Amiga networking card only.

Hope this helps.

While on the subject of ethernet over USB, there's also Thylacine that'll do exactly as the other USB cards mentioned.

I'd personally recommend the X-Surf card though. It's still made and is well supported.

Your going to need A Zorro ethernet as the others have mentioned.

Then a TCP/IP stack (Recommend) MiamiDX
Then Samba to network to the PC

If you're looking for a simple coax network card (10Base2 ) I have a working one kicking around I could let go for cheap.

X-Surf is a great way to go for networking in big box amigas!

Checkout these new x-surf cards:

get the x-surf, it's one of the best out there and it also has IDE ports for use with extra drives, so you need not run all your internal drives off your SCSI setup if you don't want to, given my fun 'hassles' with amiga SCSI termination in the past, IDE, while sometimes slower, is a LOT less hassle.

I agree im using it with my A4000T.

But please be aware the x-surf and buddha cards are not compatible with the PicassoIV card when located in a ZIV or Zorro2 board.

can you be more specific?  I've used both in different situations with a PIV with no problems. . .

One "other" option I'm currently using is to hook your 4K to a Linux-based PC using serial twisted-pair cable. And APCcomm.

Check over on eBay and do a search for Ariadne. I know there's one for sale there as I just saw it in the last two days. It's a 10 MB/s Ethernet card (10 base 2 and 10 base T) for the Zorro II slot.

Am I the only one to use an IOBlix with Ethernet module? Seem to work fine for me. :-)

@amigau

When i had an A1200T with Ziv board, i could not get the x-surf to work, so individual computers tried to assist in getting it working.

We found that if i had x-surf in any slot after the buddha card it would not work.
If i took out the buddha card and had the x-surf installed it would work.(but i had no controller!!)
If the buddha card was installed in a slot after the x-surf, the machine would not work.
So i replaced the buddha card with a ZIV PowerFlyer, and guess what it would not work!!
Individual computers told me there are issues with their cards working with the picassoiv card, something to do with address space on PIV card.

Email them they can confirm.

@Triar:
yes, you can use it, but as the ISA slots aren't active you will need:
a) a GoldenGate 2 bridgeboard
b) a Commodore Bridgeboard and the etherbridge device from Aminet

I use a 286 bridgeboard and it works quite well, the hardfile must be in an IDE drive, if you boot from SCSI like me you can copy your Expansion directory to the IDE drive and make an assign before loading binddrivers. After binddrivers you assign again sys: to your booting partition and there you go.
 I usually get around 400kbytes/s
