Installing a SCSI CD Rom

 How do I go about fitting an internal CD rom to my A1500?

What software will I need to install and what will I need to configure?

Also what RTG card would you recomend?

You'll need a scsi host adaptor card, like a C=A2091, Dataflyer, GVP HD+8, Supra, ICD or similar.  Of course you'll need a suitable 50-pin scsi-1 or scsi-2 drive (any speed will do).  After you've installed the hardware and properly configured the scsi chain and termination, you'll need a cdrom driver package to use the drive, either OS3.1's cd0: devicedriver or better yet AmiCDFS or AsimCDFS or the like.  Enter the proper device driver (scsi.device, gvpscsi.device, dataflyer, etc.) the scsi ID number of the drive and it should work.

For rtg on an A2000, look for a Zorro2 compatible card (Picasso II/II+/IV, Cybervision64/3D, GVP Spectrum 28/24, Piccolo, etc.).

Some more tips, if you didn´t know this... you can only have 8MB ram on the ZorroII so if you have an rtg with say 4MB then you can only have 4MB extra ram on a GVP for instance. But you will overcome that with an acceleratorcard, that is you can still only have 8MB on ZorroII but you can have as much ram as the acceleratocard can take.

For a good SCSI-card I would go for the GVP HD+8, it´s easy and works with most other Zorro cards. But if you find a Blizzard 2040/2060 then I would go with that because then you´ll have SCSI2 with 10MB/s.  :-)

What's an A1500 Never heard of it. I installed a CDRom for my A3000 with an external cable. I gather that the A1500 does not have a connection on the motherboard ??

I believe it already as a controler card as it has a 270mb scsi HD and a external SCSI Connection.

The A1500 is the same as the A2000 but no HD as std and two flopppy drives!!

Even the case and manuals are for the A2000  :-)

So you already have a SCSI-controller? Well then, open up the case and tell us the name.  :-)

Its an Alpha Data Ocktagon 2000 SCSI card.

That should work okay, not sure if it uses polled i/o or is dma able.  It makes a difference in that a dma card, like the GVP HC+8 or A2091 doesn't tie up the cpu as much when accessing the drive.  You can probably get device drivers for the Octagon on BBoAH (see link on the left hand side of this page).
