How to clone my hdd
« on: November 09, 2005, 07:31:31 PM »
Hi there!
I have my Amiga 1200 HDD (850 MB), full of things.
Im about to moving into a bigger one (maybe 20 gigas)
I have OS 3.1 roms, and 3.9 system
The actual HDD has 3 partitions : hd0 (workbench), hd1 (stuff) and hd2 (games)

My question is: how could i "clone" my 850 MB into the bigger one, so i just unplug the smallest, put the new one, swithc my machine on, and have exactly the same stuff??

Is it possible doing this just copying everything using DOpus, and then changing the names of the partitions on the new hdd? (i put as slave, and partitioned just like the samll one, but instead of hd0,hd1 and hd2, i have dh0, dh1 and dh2). I dont want to mess up thing with Assign or things like that, just need to clone the disc

Thanks in advance

Sebastian

Yes, it's possible to just copy the data over to the new drive, and then rename the partitions once the old drive is gone.  I did this recently going from a 60GB to 120GB drive.  I used the shell command COPY while booted without Workbench (to ensure there were no files in use, although I don't know if it was necessary).  IIRC, the arguments were something like C:COPY SYS: SYS_NEW: ALL CLONE.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Or you can plug the Drive into a PC with WinUAE and copy the files of the HD to a Windows folder, and then burn it!   now you can copy them back to your Amiga..and you will have a CD back up as well :-)

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

if you decide to boot without WB, don't forget to first run  setpatch or idefix or whatever is needed for large partitions.
Better sorry than worry.

@leirbag28

You lose file attributes that way, though.

Hi,

Just wondering, is there a difference using dopus for the copying, compared to the copy command (all clone) ?

Afaik, the only difference is dopus being easier to use.
