Best Hardware To Run Amigaos 4
« on: November 05, 2005, 02:33:48 PM »
I'm planning to buy a new Amiga. I want to use OS4 with it. I want to use ddr rams as sdram are expensive and hard to find. I would prefer 4x or 8x AGP. Does such hardware exist? If it doesn't which is the best Amiga to run OS4?
A4000T, 604e@400&060@66, 128MB+16MB+Zorram256, CVisionPPC, VLabMotion, Toccata, XSurf100&RapidRoad, Prisma Megamix

A1200, Blizzard060@50, 256MB, Blizzard IV SCSI, FastATA mk4

If you want an Amiga to run OS4, then an A1200 with a BlizzardPPC should suffice, but I'd look for an A4000+CyberstormPPC instead.

If you want something newer than an Amiga, then your only option is an "AmigaOne". Maybe some dealer has some new ones left in stock, or you'd have to look for a second-hand one.

There is no hardware which AmigaOS users are allowed to buy that uses DDR RAM and AGP 4-8x.

I wasn't aware that the PPC Classic version of OS4 was released outside of a private beta. Unless you want to run lots of hardware-banging software seamlessly along with newer PPC software, it's hard to justify the cost of a CyberStormPPC. I've seen them go for about as much as a new AmigaOne (back when A1s were actually available new anyway).

Technically they can buy whatever they want, they're just not allowed to install OS4 on any such machine.

Anyway, to answer the OPs question, I'd probably wait for either the ACK board or the new Troika board. Unfortunately, neither have announced release dates as of yet.

As long as we're nitpicking ;), OS4 isn't released for "AmigaOnes" either, just a "developer pre-release". Anyway, the OP was asking about Amigas, and I think it's relatively safe to say that AmigaOS4 will be also available for Amigas.

I know, but I figured I didn't have to explicitly state that the licensing scheme, bizarre as it might be, does NOT mean that an AInc representative will be sent to your home to supervise all your hardware purchases. :)

The ACK board is meant to be an expansion for Amigas AFAIK, so in that case an A4000 would probably be a safe bet anyway. I don't think it's safe to bet on the existence of an ACK board though...

Troika's "Amy'05" as it's specified today won't have an AGP 4/8x slot.
(Maybe there's a better chance that this vapourware will actually come to exist one day. I mean, if I was running an IWin type scam, then I'd make the fake specs to be significantly better and the price significantly less insane than the poor current offering it's supposed to replace... The Troika thing is too weird to be fake! ;))
