Is there some kind of creature that eats them, I keep running out?

I don't know about eating them, but the first person I would ask about disappearing socks is our very own Bloodline  :-)

Well, I guess there are two probabilities:
first one is a wormhole alike vortex generated in the washing machine, where smaller things like socks dissapear. But ppl only notice it with socks since socks always are in pairs.

Another probability is a cult of sock-worshippers, who probably steal socks to sacrifice them in a most horrible way.

You're almost right. This 'creature' is normally seen wearing an AROS T-shirt, although it doesn't devour your socks, best not ask about that though (Lets just say be very suspicous if only one sock is dry :-o)
On schedule, and suing

some say the vortex in the washing machine leads directly to the sock god, but of course that's superstition, I guess the explanation can indeed be found near home, thinking of greedy sweaty hands which like to grab.

How many people do you share your house with? Socks have a habit of being stolen by other people living with you....you can only hope no sticky fate befalls them after that....

When I was at boarding school there used to be a trick called a pie-bed. What they would do is untuck the top sheet on a dude's bed, at the foot end, then bring it up to the top and turn it back before tucking the whole lot in and putting the blanket back exactly how it was. I can't tell you how irritating it was when they got me with that, because I had spent a late night studying and I jumped into bed and found myself cooped up halfway down. It is quite a rude jolt when your feet meet resistance when least expected. No amount of kicking could free the 'pie' and I heard raucous laughter from around the corner.
In the same spirit, imagine if someone 'pied' your sock. By that I mean...imagine if they 'gummed' it closed halfway?

The Eater of Socks!

From the discworld book Hogfather by Terry Pratchett.

Read it, Terry Pratchett is better than even Douglas Adams.

This is really weird, but a large quantity of socks have suddenly appeared in my sock drawer... I had assumed the G/F had ventured down the side of the bed and found my stash... but now I'm not sure :-?

I keep getting holes in mine.

Is there a brand/model of sock that is better than all the others?

I got several pairs of black socks with a blue toe line many years ago in South Africa. These things must be mil-spec because they survived three years of permanent night duty, all the shooting/tactical courses I went on, a good deal of hiking in SA and lately a lot of squash games. I haven't seen them here in the UK, but if I return to SA I will definitely be looking for them (I think I got them at Edgars).
