10 Million PSPs
« on: October 22, 2005, 05:49:28 AM »
Wow, that was quick!  Selling faster than the PS2 did!

PSP Hits 10 Million

Quote
Around 4.5 million units have been shipped in North America followed by 3 million units in Japan and Asia. Around 2.5 million have been sold into European outlets; impressive given how recently the machine arrived there.

Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I understand that the disc format of that PSP can't be written on a PC. Correct me if I am wrong. But that is what stopped me getting one, because I would probably use it to run AV presentations through a video projector if I could design the animations and slides on my PC and then record a disc to play through the PSP. A guy at work showed me his PSP and I was impressed by the quality of the screen and playback (that was a music video).

You cant record onto a UMD (no blank media and recordable drives afaik) but you can dump the files onto a memory stick from your pc, software is provided for this purpose.

I think the pixel problems are fixed, or were overstated FUD to begin with.  Of the 5 co-workers that have PSPs only one has a single stuck pixel.  It's always red so it shows up mostly on all black or all white screens.  The homebrew scene has created pixel fixers, but I've not tried them.

@X-ray

As mentioned, you can write them onto a Memory Stick Duo Pro.

The other problem you'll face is there is no built in video output.  There is a third party device, but it doesn't look so convienient.  In your case you're better off with a PocketPC with CF video card.

Composite would have been okay...I thought it had at least that. Hmmmm I must be thinking of something else, I need to read up on it.

That is impressive ... but not supprising.

Sony have made such an increadable piece of device, there.

Technology is getting better at an unbelievable rate, and it seems that Sony are one of the leaders.

no built-in composite, but there is an upgrade, to use as well as a ps2 controller as a tv. IIRC

@adolescent

"Of the 5 co-workers that have PSPs only one has a single stuck pixel."

Of the three guys I know (two of which got one opening day) all have stuck pixels.

Guy 1: 2 stuck
Guy 2: 2 stuck and the "button issue."
Guy 3: 1 stuck

So I don't think it's FUD. BUT I think the "squeeze/twist disc eject" rumour is. All three were pissed, but I don't think it bothers them any more than the 2 stuck on my LCD monitor that I paid $400 for!!! And it definitly isn't as bad the the 17-in trinitron I bought brand new that green screened me in a month and that took Sony another month to send me a new one.

Sony has quality control issues.  :-(

You got to understand I used to be Sony's biggest fan, but now I just don't know I'll wait and see.

In the meantime it's DS for me. I love Nintendos games.

I must admit I was MIGHTY HARD for me not to buy a PSP. It definitly is a cool geek toy.

Impressive! Still, the Nintendo DS has the lead, not to mention the Gameboy.

Nobody can touch the Gameboy.  Just like no one can catch the PS2.  But, I don't hold out much for the Nintendo DS future.  Nintendo said from the start that it wasn't a replacement for the Gameboy line.  I do think the PSP sales are impressive given the cost of the system.  (I'm even more shocked at the amount of UMD movies that have been sold!)

Regarding the pixels, people with dead/stuck pixels should have their PSP replaced.  Sony has already said they would warranty them if needed.

Update Comment on Sony PSP TFTs...

Japanese release had Samsung TFTs...
American release had Sharp TFTs...

Samsung TFTs are really reliable.

I bought a Sony. To tell you the truth I thought the color was a little richer and I paid $50 less. In a month I had3 stuck pixels. You think I would have learned by now this is my third consecutive Sony purchase that went bad. (PS, 17-in CRT, then the TFT)

Wish I had bought the Samsung.

Samsung is today what Sony was 10 years ago.

Like MS, I think Sony got so big the head don't know what the A$$ is doing.

Didn't SOny buy and promptly kill Pychnosis somewhere along the way?
