A1200 Z4 tower
« on: October 13, 2005, 02:58:12 AM »
I have recently bought a z4 tower from eyetech and have got everything setup except I don't know where to plug in the power switch or LEDs and I don't think I received a LED header adapter.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The LEDs should plug into the pins beside the floppy.  It's a bit weird how it plugs in - there's a row of pins that you get with the tower.  These go beside the pins already on the motherboard.  The LED wires get connected across these pins.

If you have the EZ-Key-XS (or whatever it is, but definitely XS) then you won't be able to plug in the power switch.  You need the full version of the EXKey adapter, or another keyboard adapter.

I don't have my instructions handy and it can be a bit of a bugger getting into my tower so I can't even take a photo or check it myself.  Just make sure you're not plugging them into the floppy power pins instead :-)

Thanx for the reply.
I really need to know where to plug the power switch lead, I don't have EZ key because I have a modded k/b adapter and i'm desperate to get the bloody thing working again as at the moment it is lifeless. I can try phoning Eyetech but do not hold out much hope.
p.s. the LEDs are not essential but would be nice.

I myself don't have the full EZKey (I have the XS with only the reset switch connectors) with the power connection on it.  I used to have to switch it on at the back (the PSU itself had a switch on it).  That changed when I got an old PC that was useless.  Handily the PSU inside that was ancient and has it's own switch to attatch to the front of the case.  It's a big black cable coming directly out of the PSU with a switch on the end.  I was able to screw it to the front of the case squint, but with the power button on you wouldn't notice.

If you can pick up a PSU with it's own switch-on-a-cable then you're in luck.  Although the way the PSUs work today from the motherboard that might be a bit of a problem.

The LEDs however should be easy.

You got a row of pins with the case?  Those pins go next to the row for the original LEDs.  (Looking from the front of the mobo with the expansion on the right)  You've got the floppy power pins, then the LED pins below that, the new pins line up below that.  A jumper goes on the right most pin on the new row and connects to the right most pin on the original LED row.  That keeps it in place.

Now, from left to right there are 3 things to connect in the same way, the black wires connect to the new part and the coloured ones connect to the original LED part.  Power SW is first (green and black). followed by Sleep LED (yellow) and finally HDD LED (red).  Then there's the empty space then the jumper.

The Reset SW (blue and white) goes on the EZKey thing, so you won't have a reset switch I'm afraid.

If the instructions for the LEDs are crap I'll upload a piccy aswell :-)

Forgot to say, the LEDs don't go by the names.

The Power SW does the Power LED aswell as being the switch aswell, the HDD LED does do the HDD though.  But the Sleep LED does the floppy LED (which means you have 2 floppy LEDs as you can still see the one on the drive itself).

Oh, and I got your PM while taking my A1200 apart to see what went where :-)

My Z5 Tower came with an AT PSU with a big black cable and a switch, you can get them out of old 486 machines available at all good car boot sales.
I still have my instructions from my Z5, they cover AT and ATX PSUs with or without the use of a PC, A1, G-Rex 1200,Predator-SE or EZKey-XS.
If you need them or think they might help, email me.

At the risk of going off topic, I'm working on some Cthuluh inspired work for a portfolio to send to Chaosium. I'll email you a sneak-peak before I send it if you like.
Stop at president? Nah, probably not.
