A500 power supply
« on: October 13, 2005, 01:45:33 AM »
Hi,
I just bought an A500 from a user in another country; they use a 220v power supply.  In order for me to make use of their/my computer, I need to simply change the power supply correct? Or is there more to it than that?  Thanks.

Getting a different power supply will help.  Other than that you may need to use a PAL compatible display since you won't be able to see what you are typing on an NTSC TV because of the flicker.  Once those two things (power supply & graphic display) are ironed out you should be fine.

Would replacing the Angus change my PAL A500 to a NTSC?

Thanks.

Switching to ECS and Kickstart 2+ will allow you to switch from PAL to NTSC from the early startup menu.  However, most software for the A500 requires Kickstart 1.3 and runs in PAL mode anyway so you would probably be better off trying to find a 50Hz RGB monitor such as a Commodore 1084S.

On newer Agnuses you can hardware switch PAL / NTSC by connecting _TEST to GND (NTSC) or not (PAL) - independent of OS version. My Rev5 A500 had this hardwired, so I bent the socket pin and soldered a wire to the chip. A2k/A3ks have jumpers.
