ATX PSU for cyberstormppc/mediator4000DI
« on: October 09, 2005, 04:03:39 PM »
Well I purchased several psu to try to boot my amiga(A4000cyberstorm(604/233-060/50) mediator busboard with voodoo5 spider fastethernetcard and isdn surfer with delfina attached.
All psu's I tried did boot up nicely indeed but when the amiga had been working for some time it just won't boot anymore.
Now I have purchased me a 460W ATX and modified it so it has a amiga powerplug now placed several wires(thick ones) for all voltages and ground.
Same problem!
Only psu which does the job is the original psu of 145W.
I now use this one and an other atx one to power my drives.
Not ideal.
Anybody got a working setup like this one with ATX PSU?
Does the original psu produces a higher peak at start or something?

I don't have the same setup but the 4000D that I modified  probable draws more power. It's a 4000D with a Toaster/Flyer and all the flyer drives, plus 3 more ISA slot under the same 4000D case.(or a total of 4 harddrives, 3 flyer and 1 system)
I removed the 145 watt power supply and replaced it with a ATX 550 watt. The computer run fine with the ATX.
I could upload some pic. to Amiga.org if you want to see the modified 4000D.

What is your processorcard?
As it only concerns the cyberstormppc as I also tried a cyberstormmk2 which workes just fine with the other psu's.
But I definately need an other psu as the original (while it only feeds the mobo/mediator) is on it's limits.
As soon as I ad one other thing(like buddha) the original screenmodes start to turn black after a few secs.
What is your model type brand psu you are using?

@amiga4001

in a A4000D original case?

the problem is heat. Try to reroute the internal flat-cable and . . . . not so easy but you'll need a fan somewhere that extract hot air from the case. (ie one of those "thing" that you place in a free back slot)

No it isn't in a desktop case it is in a tower.
And it really is powerrelated as as soon as it doesn't boot up no more with the modified atx psu I tried with the original right away and bingo booting.
Surely it has something to do with some kind of powerpeak at start which PC don't need to powerup.
Nobody with a cyberstormppc with an ATX psu?

That is also a very heavy setup.
You have no problems booting up (coldstart of course) when it has been turned on for a while?
Very strange this is as the system itself is very solid here.

Hi,

Did you connect pin 8 (PWR GOOD) of the ATX supply to pin 1 of the A4000D power connector?

@amiga40001

My Amiga 4000 also uses an ATX PSU, and I have never had any problems with it yet, other than user related problems :-D

I think it is a 450 watt, and it powers an Amiga 4000, CyberStormPPC 060@50 604e@233, ELBOX Zorro II/III busboard, Mediator PCI 4000, Voodoo 3 3000, FastEthernet, Terratec 512i soundcard, TV card, Algor USB, 1 x 160 GB hdd, 2 x CD-RW and 3 IDE --> SCSI bridges.

Yes I did connect the (PW-OK grey wire) of atx to the powerconnector of the amiga.
Don,t know if it is number one on the powerconnector but when cold it boots nicely and with a "normal" processorcard all works well so wiring should be ok right?
Strange thing is I even tried it with only mobo and cyberstorm and nothing else same problem.
Can not be that there is enough current(460 W against 145W).
So has something to do with a kind of peak which the psu must deliver to start booting(just guessing here).
Maybe these problems onlt appear with the 604 on 233 MHZ?

How much have you payed for that PSUs?

Some (most) cheap PSUs even the 400 or more watts one, are designed for P4 crap systems and they works (stabilize) with very heavy loads.

Below a certain load (thats our case) those PSUs are very, very crap.

I have an A4000D with CSPPC233/128megs ram, Voodoo3, Prometheus, Network card, 10krpm scsi drive, cdrom and using a 300watt Antec ATX PSU.  No problems.  Mounted in an ATX tower of course.

Well actually I tried 3 PSUs one AT200W secondhand 3 euro one new ATX 250W 20 euro one ATX secondhand 460W 15 euro.
I don't care about spending a lot of money one a new psu but I got to be sure it works.
Is this sunsonic a good brand to purchase you think?
Any other recommandations?

Antec, Sunsonic or so . . . . nothing below 40-50EUR for a 300/350W PSU.

Mine is a "Sunsonic SS-250SF Active PFC" but no more produced (IIRC its available the 300 or 350 watt)

Take a look to some online reseller.

RS-Components has the 350 watt one (uhg!!! 73 EUR)

Goto www.rs-components.com, chose your country and type in the search string

ss-350fs OR ss-300fs

EDIT- just checked . . . Germany is cheaper than Italy :-(
