Speakers, speakers and speakers......which ones?
« on: March 27, 2003, 07:04:44 PM »
Hey People!
hows it goin?
I just need some advice about something I wanna buy, I would like to buy some speakers for my DVD player and I'd like some good ideas/suggestions on some good ones to buy, I can spend upto £100
Some I am seriously thinking of buying are the top of the range from Mercury, (follow the link to see a discription)
Speakers
but I don't really want 5.1 speakers, what I am really looking for is some 2.1 speakers, I am wondering what kind of power (in watts) makes good heavy bass and would these be good?
Any other speaker systems that seem to work please let me know. I want some with some good wattage and quality
I would need some with L and R phono inputs and preferably (but not vital) DTS Digital Input
Thanks for all your suggestions
D@n
Fast it good :-o  :-o

D@n,

You realize that your username is "illegal" and won't work with e-mail forwarding, right?

Affordable speakers have seldom looked so handsome. Although you can get them as black as the SW40 sub and CC40 centre reviewed here, the 110s and 210s were, for their HCC audition, in a lovely cherry finish (and are also available in grey). Maybe our boxes didn’t match cosmetically, but at least we got to see how smart this combo from JPW can look.

Btw... I use Jpw gold.     pretty punchy little speakers.
( Am using a four speaker setup.... wharfedale floor mounts... jpw's as "high mounts"

Are you speaking of a stand-alone DVD player?
Are you using an amplifier?
In either case, you need to know the wattage output of either one and purchase speakers with a higher rating, but not too high.

I am using sony self-powered speakers for my computer and they work great, they even sense a line input and automatically turn on.  These are 18 year old speakers and discontinued.

AT first I got some 2.1 computer speakers. Yamaha YST-MS28, but I doubt you`ll be able to get them anymore. It has 2 inputs (x2 stereo) which can mix together the 2 inputs. I have a full 5.1 system now, but still use this subwoofer. Its not bad for £60. Though my 5.1 system cost about £370 on top of that. I`m slowly upgrading bits of it. Your not going to find a 2.1 system which has coaxial or optical inputs. Well I`d say very unlikely. Also there wouldn`t be much point either.

I myself bought some cheap speakers for my standalone dvd player i got a set of creative computer speakers with sub from pc world for 29 pound and  for what  they are they sound ok and have  reasonable sound quality with a quite good sub .Only problem was modiftying the cable for connections to dvd player although you could buy an adaptor.

Depends on what you want: If you want a nice base go for a subwoofer, if you can get a set with its own amplifier it would be great. If you want a nice quality sound you might want to buy some smaller speakers for the same amount of money for example B&W DM303 speakers. Speakers like these have a great sound and if you want you can add an active base later on. (afterall 100 £ aint alot to spend on speakers)

My favorite are the B&W nautilis series :)

~$20,000 for the front L & R pair. they are VERY good speakers, very natural sound! :)

sorry these arnt exactly the ones, but they are similar

B&W speakers look good in your house as well!
:)

search for them on the net

D@n: For $100..? That would give you two halfbad satellites, or REALLY crappy 2.1.

But hey, I'm the owner of a pair of high-end 3-way active speakers (active = one driver, one amp) with Seas Excel and Scan-Speak drivers. Unless I can close my eyes and sit infront of a live performance, it's crap :-)
*Zap! Zap!* Ha! Take that! *Kabooom!* Hey, that\'s not fair!
