I don't quite understand all the flack.
Basically the UN wants more control over
the root servers traditionally maintained
by the USA. The USA wants to keep that control.
It all has to be tied to $$$. So what if other
countries want to keep their own root servers.
I don't see how it would work much differently
than it does now. I don't see traffic, amiga or
otherwise, being affected between the americas,
europe and austrailia. I just see the cash flow
changing. There is concern that dispering control
to other countries that are accused of censorship
will impose more censorship if they can control
root servers. I say they already censor, and will
continue to censor no matter who runs the roots.
If the US or other counties don't like traffic
from other domains in other countries, it will
simply be filtered. Or maybe there will be a USA
only Internet Version 2. Anyone have more insight?

If the U.N. controlled the Internet then the oppressive censorship of China and Iran would pervade the whole internet instead of just the parts of it that were in their countries.

As long as the Internet is controlled by the U.S. its control will be farmed out to a private company as it presently is.  This private company can be as international as any nonprofit assembly such as the U.N. while not being mired in beuracracy.  If they do get mired in beauracracy then the U.S. will not renew their contract and another company will take control.
