Floppy Controller Board
« on: October 03, 2005, 07:42:14 PM »
One of my A500's external floppy drives has died. I took it apart to find that the floppy drive seemed to be a standard PC floppy drive with a controller board hooked up to it. The controller board consists of a standard PC floppy connector and Power connector that plugs into the floppy drive then a connector that the Amiga cable plugs into. Now IF this drive was a standard PC drive, and this "controller board" works to make it talk to the Amiga, can I use it to plug a new drive into my Amiga?

This one I am unsure of, but I do know I had an external floppy drive which seemed to only have a controller board, and it was connected to a PC floppy drive, but not entirely true. I connected a PC floppy drive, and it did not work. And yes, i checked for the HD, DD holes, and still no go..

I think some drives you can actually change the jumpers so the Amiga can work with it..

PC floppy drives cost about $8 to $11 US, so try it out and let us know if it works.  What brand of external floppy drive did you take apart?
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Hi,

Just a reply of little constructive use ?...
Just to say PC floppys are not in any way pin compatible with amiga Flops..

There are a few hardwired hacks to get them to work in a fashion.. but its a lot of grief..

Is yours a 1.76 HD drive or the DD 880k?..
if a 880k  .. no chance at all without xtra hacks..

if an HD there were some odd pC flopps that did work some years back but probably little hope of finding one nowadys as its all PC.PC.PC.and built cheap.. ( 3-5 quid for a floppy drive )...
hmmm.
( mind you i am typing on one PC here ;-) )

take care
C..
