My little lady has returned!
« on: September 29, 2005, 03:19:06 AM »
I sold my original A1200 back in 96 and have regretted it ever since.  How could I have betrayed it?  I tried to do the right thing and took a couple of A3000's and A500's under my wing but in the end I just found them a better home and missed my A1200.

Today my recent ebay binge arrived... an A1200/30/50mhz.

At first it was a no-go.  No boot.  Did some jiggling and warm resets and finally she booted, but mouse buttons were not working and machine would randomly lock up.  Hmmm....Took the mouse apart and soaked the board in isopropyl alcohol.  Waited for it to dry while cleaning and reinserting the accelerator connectors and scsi board connector.  Put mouse back together, booted machine and hurray, the mouse works like new. Machine still locking occasionaly.

Next, stuck in a floppy. Whoops, DF0: ???.  Crap.  Ok, pulled it out, wiped the heads with alcohol, put it back together and checked that all cables are fully seated.  Yay, floppy works like a champ.

Got everything screwed back together and she's starting to behave. No more lockups and everything seems to be working.

I was planning to get her on the internet tonight, but I grabbed the wrong 9pin -> 25pin adapter for my null modem cable so I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

In the meantime, here she is... looking good I think.

Thanks MagicM for the 1200!  Next is a nice white keyboard and an extra case ... well... when I find them for a reasonable price that is.  Will OS3.9 run in 10MB on a 68030/50mhz at a reasonable speed? Anyone know where I can get some 16MB gvp sims?

Honestly, I think I could still use this machine on a daily basis... not for the heavy duty web browsing, but for some programming, mail, and every day tasks I think she's still got it! She's looking good!

Noice!

Makes me miss the way my Amiga 1200 was years back.  Now I have to either tower it or find all the parts to it.  :-(

All that isopropyl... your Amiga will become an alcoholic!  :-)

It's always good to get an old machine up and running... I've been doing the same with an A3000D... Have "un-stuck" the floppy drive's eject mechanism, upgraded its ROMs to KS3.1, given it a working hard drive and today installed a Cybervision 64 graphics card. Now all I need is a decent accelerator with some RAM on it and I'll be sorted!
