Biggest mistake?
« on: September 26, 2005, 09:41:50 PM »
So I broke down and got the SD/FF from Eyetech which IS the Scan Magic.  Said it was for A1200/A4000 and I, stupidly went ahead and got it.  why do I say stupidly?  Look at my tag... A4000T.

The instructions don't say anything abo. a A4000T installation, infact it only has written instructions for the A1200 and a photo copied picture of a A4000 MoBo that says "Fitting to A4000".  I looked at the manual on the Big Book site and that had a bit more info but it doesn't look good...

Tell me strait up, am I screwed?

I'm sure that electronically, it should work. The question is, is there enough cable length between Alice and Lisa clip-on modules in order for successful mounting? I think this should be your only concern, and of course correctly orienting the modules before clipping them on. :-)

Hmmm, looking at the positioning of the two chips on the A4000T motherboard, it seems like there won't be enough space for the modules to fit. :-(

Yeah, saw that too.  :madashell:

I ther such a thing as a riser for that style of chip?  I MIGHT be able to pull it off is I could get the clip on the Lisa to sit higher.

Also, the "NTSC/PAL" jumper sits right between the two...  Prob. just snip thise down and solder the connection for NTSC.

Where is the problem ? Just cut the cable and solder longer wires in place. It`s only two lines so no big deal.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

@ Lemmink

IIRC PaSha also had this problem. It is because of the disks module. He couldn't file the PCB of the FF enough and he couldn't avoid the pins of the disk module. There is another thread somewhere here about it.

If need be I could open up my A1200T tomorrow night and measure the SD/FF PCBs and cables to give you an idea.  I could post a pic of it too.

tankz but from the other post it doesn't look to good.

At this point I'd be willing to trade for an internal sollution that would work in a A4000T or and External that does AGA.  Mine is the Scan Magic so it IS a SD/FF and it's brand new too...

I have the external Eyetech `EZ-VGA Plus' Scandoubler/FF for my A1200 desktop. You have to bare in mind that when you have an external one it will protrude an extra 4" from the back and when it's made from sheet metal like the EZ VGA that could be a lot of strain on the video socket when dangling off an A4000t.

:-)

You could try getting/making a 23-pin video extender male-female but probably your best bet is the internal option.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you get yourself the wonderous Picasso-IV with it's superb internal Scandoubler/FF? It's the best there is since it supports full 24-bit unlike the 16-bit hacks...

I have an A4000T sitting right here that I installed one of these units in. I am not overjoyed with the performance, but it is better, until I can get the Picasso card working again.
I did have to extend the lines (wires), but that is a snap.
Eye ball everything carefully - it may not be as bad you think.
It's a shame you're so far away, I could pop it in for you.................

Uh, no. The part with two lines on it goes on the Lisa chip, and fits perfectly.
The problem is the main PCB that is supposed to go on Alice, this can't be fitted due to the A4000T Floppy/SCSI-module (#¤&%%& DCE for not taking the A4000T into consideration when making this thing and offsetting the PLCC socket....). Possible solutions: Soldering a lot (presumably) of wires from Alice (via a PLCC socket clipped on) to the ScanMagic, or use a PLCC socket extender (ridiculously expensive, at least the ones I've found so far).

And, anyway, rumor has it that this thing isn't quite AGA anyway, only doing 16-bits (8 red, 4 green and 4 blue). Please correct me if I'm wrong here (seriously, I would like to be wrong on this one :-D)

A little off topic: Does anyone know about a TFT/LCD monitor that does 15kHz on the VGA input? Please provide manufacturer/model number.

-Paul

Exactly how many wires are we talking about here?

Hmm, mine can. It's a Medion MD6144AO 15" TFT (or is it LCD, can newer remember the difference?). The only 15 Hz screen it hasn't been able to display until yet is Dynablaster, all others work fine, but 15 Hz isn't crystal clear unfortunately.

I bought a Medion 17" with the same design layout hoping that it could display 15 Hz as well, but that one needed a scandoubler, so I'm looking for one that's better than my MicroniK Scandy :-)

-EDIT-

Here is a picture of the monitor displaying a 15 Hz screen. Dunno if anyone can see it from this picture, but there are some vertical lines on the display. Not that big of a problem to me though, as the display delivered by my MicroniK Scandy is actually worse...
