external ide cdrom
« on: September 23, 2005, 03:51:12 AM »
Hi peoples

What is the easiest way to setup an external IDE cd drive to an A1200?
Are there any hacks you can do to get power to the drive?

Thanks

I am planning on doing this same system with my A1200. I got a little PCB that converts the IDE header from 44 pin to 40 pin, so I can have a 3.5 hd in the A1200. I will run the slave device as a CD-rom drive externally ( have to keep it close by becuase the cable is only like 2 ft long) and will power the CD drive via a small PC Power supply unit I purchased used for about $1.50  All you have to do to get the PC power supply to fire up when you plug it in is splice the green and grey wires before the motherboard harness and connect them on opposite ends of a toggle switch. (Follow me)

Hope it helps.

You need a splitter, Vesalia sells a good external cd kit, comes with with 52X eternal /w power supply, splitter, and ribbon. Only thing is you have a ribbon coming out of the 1200 to the Cd that is fixed.  This could be made better with connections and cable that can be removed.

@Beowulf

The easiest way is using an "PCMCIA CD1200-controller",
because you don't have to open the A600 case:

www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=524

I'm using one with a CDRW-drive on my A630HD and it works great! The power is coming from a cable connected to the disk-drive expansion slot. Make sure you use a heavy power supply like the A500's 4.3A. Instead of a Mitsumi CD drive, you can also use most other IDE-atapi CD/CDRW drives.
Ofcourse, if you use the PCMCIA slot, you can't use it for Fast-Ram or anything else on the same time.
PCMCIA CD1200-controllers are frequently for sale on eBay.
