HELP! I think I blew up my A1200!
« on: September 18, 2005, 10:05:20 PM »
Ive got an IDE splitter cable going to the HD and a CD drive but I think a couple of wires touched eachother and sparked and now when I turn on my Amiga the screen is blank and the HD makes weird noises.
ive tried it without the HD and the floppy clicks but the screen is dead!

HELP!

I don't think anything can be done.
If you blew out some chip or the video circuits the easiest is to replace the motherboard and be more carefull next time.

Ouch!  Sorry to hear it, but it looks like you'll need a new motherboard.  Not getting anything on the screen is a bad sign.

I knew someone who bought an IDE interface years ago and accidentally hooked it up the wrong way.  There was a slight fizz noise then loads of black smoke.  Thankfully it was only the IDE interface that was blown.  Absolutely nothing else was damaged at all.  Except his confidence ;-)

You've likely shorted out one of the two cia controllers.
They are surface mount, hard to replace and these days
hard to find replacements. The price of a replacement
MB seems reasonable, good luck in your search.

does the floppy click constantly or only once when Amiga is turned on? If it clicks all the time, maybe its not so badly destroyed (hopefully)
in any case, don't throw the motherboard away, you might need it one day for parts
Better sorry than worry.

Hopefully the ROMs are OK. If so the price of replacement motherboard from E Bay dealer is quite reasonable and you don't have the lottery of bidding !!

You could also try AmigaKit but might baulk at their price.

Ouch, I hate when I do that

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn\'t enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

Amiga Kit obviously keep a keen eye on these forums and have subsequently reduced the price of a replacement motherboard. Considering the Amiga market this is good news and shows they take the Amiga and it's customers seriously.  :-)
