WOW, all I can say is HOLY SH*T!!!

$438.77 in US dollars at the end of that auction. I am dumbfounded by that. Jesus, I think that when I bought my first A500 back in the 80's I paid less than that brand new WITH a 1084 monitor!!!

I almost feel like writing an email to the chap who won and saing, "Congratulations! You own the most expensive A500 on the planet!"

Thanks,
Mike

You don't believe this was a real auction, do you?
Look at the biddings list.

@ drwho

I have one word for you: EBAY!!!

Do you not all find that the majority of items, once listed on Ebay, suddenly increase damatically beyond all sense in market value?

I bought an A500 on Ebay for £30.00 (approx $18) including postage, and my brother got an A500+ for £10.00!!!!

The problem is, either all those stupid bids were fake bids by friends or relatives to push up the price (so more fool anyone genuine who carries it on just to win, because your common sense [if have any] should prevail to tell you that its not worth it so just leave it and look at another listing) or people who got caught up in auction fever and lost all sense of the lot's actual worth, and just went bid crazy!

Well this is a A500 PLUS so it's not some plane Jane A500.  If that helps.  I know here in the USA this model is worth more than a regular A500....

A500 plus is pretty common in my opinion. I see them come by several times a year. Maybe I should harvest them.

What the hell?? how is it possible to bid so much for such a standard a500?? There are not much orginal games/software included either. I sure hope this dude has atleast removed or replaced the battery.

I sometimes wonder if i should sell my stuff on the international ebay... I have 3 a500 now. One with a gvp scsi disk "500something megs" and around 4.5megs of ram.. I also have the orginal package of my first a500, which is in much better condition that the one he sells.
I doubt i would get more than max around $80-100 for it here on norwegian auctions....

Apparently, judging by that auction, you could get a bundle of cash for it too.

What I am trying to say is that an auction is not always what it looks like:
- it can be a setup by one or two guys (there are only two bidders willing to bid that high);
- we will not know if the transaction will really ever take place.
If someone wants to pay a price like this, I believe it is highly unlikely the auction is real. Because there are a lot of opportunities you can buy for a much better price for the same item. Also on Ebay.

Well I guess you could run into real problems when some freaks decide to bid an auction into the sky only to never be heard of after that.
You have to pay the huge provision to ebay, unless you can prove the deal never took place. That's the hard part how do you prove it, when the buyer even leaves you a "fast delivery, fine thank you" feedback.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

The thing I think a lot of people end up thinking, is that they saw an item go on ebay for X amount, so they say 'Maybe I should sell mine if they are worth that much!!!' However, ebay doesn't work like that. So many things affect the price
1) The listing - lots of photos and a nice clear description with an account of flaws with the item helps
2) The cost and availability of different shipping options
3) The condition of the item, if they are usually battered and the one being sold isn't, that'll push up the price
4) The feedback of the seller
5) What the market for that item is like - if one hasn't been on ebay for ages, and then someone lists one, there might be a flurry of bidding activity. If a few have been sold recently, the price that they go for drops, as some of the people looking out for one have won auctions and are no longer in the running when that item comes up.

Its very easy for me to think, 'Jeez, that scandoubler went for two hundred quid, maybe I should sell mine, I could do with the money', but chances are I will be disappointed...
