Well, Kick1.4 was beta (AFAIK) and probably had some issues with 68040's. Does anyone know if 68040/68060's work with Kick1.x at all?

Yes 68040 and even 68060 work with Kick 1.3. The drawback is that they are only initialised as an 68EC030, as stated in the handbook of the Blizzrad2060.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

any actual os rom for a3000 will work but with 1.4roms it is different because the rom actually does the same thing as a softkick utility and that uses the mmu of the 68030 only. the very first code that is run on an a3000 with kick 1.4 is the kick 1.4 rom itself there is no way around it. it will not run at all on 040 or 060. not even the a3640 will run. if you have the money to get a decent accelerator why try to hack the os, save your pennies and get roms. they are worth it. (unless you pay like a hundred bucks for them and if you would do that i have some for sale  :-D )
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,
