A1200 pcmcia-nic problem

hey again..still having problem with getting my amiga online...now I finally got drivers for the nic, amitcp installed and configured and everything seems to worked...but I get no link on the nic.

I tryed the nic on a pc laptop and the nic works just fine, the small green led is also shining so the nic is getting power. If I run prepcard it founds the card but says it may be corrupt...guessing its just because it dont recognize the card...it also say its 3com unknow device.

Im running A1200 with hd, workbench 3.0, the nic is an 3com 3c589B, downloaded drivers from aminet (3c589.lha).

Anyone who have an idea whats the error can be? pleaze..this is making me insane  :-x

Do you get any error messages starting AmiTCP?
There should be a line in the AMITCP:db/interfaces file mentioning 3c589.device. Is this present?

A useful utility is comm/net/sanautil.lha from Aminet. If you run this with the status option it will show if the device can see the card properly.

Technically minded Amiga hardware people should consider putting together packages of pcmcia cards, software and instructions, that are A1200 compatible.. on ebay for sale.

No, I get no error mess then i start Amitcp and yes, Ive added a line in AMITCP:db/interfaces that points at 3c589.device. well..i grab that sanautil from aminet and check it out.

Have you tried unplugging the card with the Amiga powered up?

There is a bug in the PCMCIA interface that stops cards being recognised easily (they do not reset).

I use some software to reset my PCMCIA card, works fine.

Just a short note: if you want to do anything on the internet at all, you'll need fastram anyway. 2mb chip is really not enough.

As Stedy already pointed out, the PCMCIA on the A1200 has a reset problem.
Neither turn on the machine with a PCMCIA-card plugged nor reset or turn it off.

Turn on the machine and after loading insert the card for use, pull the card before turning off the machine or reset.

Theres are some easy hardware fixes for the Gayle-Chip which can fix this problem.
There are several documents on Aminet..

I have a 589EC which works perfectly with the 3C589 drivers and MiamiDx.  I am also running the CardPatch util on Aminet, and I think CardReset also features in my user-startup (I was having some occasional problems where the machine wouldn't start up properly until I removed the PCMCIA card).  The other difference (besides CPU/RAM)  is that I'm running KS3.1/OS3.5.

The PrepCard messages are normal - that is more or less what I get here.  The light on the card won't show up until you try to connect and have an active connection (ie. cable is connected to card and some other active device).   Note that it doesn't seem fussy about turning the light off, unlike if you use the same card with Windows when the light would go off as soon as the link disconnected.

Good luck!  I managed to get mine set up and running in a matter of minutes, although I only use it with a cross-over connection to a PC.

So does Miami require a registration key? I have heard something about that.

I finally got a Linksys card that cnet recognises perfectly. My next problem is getting TCP/IP to work so I can ftp to my Windoze boxes. I hear that Miami from aminet stops after a few minutes. I run OS3.1 and don't have fastram. I don't need to browse the interent.

Also, (I'm a newbie as you can tell) the cnet readme says to put the cnet.device in Devs:Networks/cnet.device. I don't have a Devs partition. I have a System partition with a Devs drawer. Should I put the device in System:Devs/Networks/cnet.device? I would have to add a networks drawer.

DEVS: is an assign to your system partition Devs-directory. So you got it right, you should put it as System:Devs/Networks/cnet.device (which is identical to DEVS:Networks/cnet.device).

Assigns are sort of a "virtual" partitions inside the real partitions, they make accessing files/dirs inside long paths much faster and easier.

For example you can make MY: point to work:my/stuff/is/in/here/inside/long/path/

Assign MY: work:my/stuff/is/in/here/inside/long/path
[you can put commands like this into s:user-startup file, to make them permanent]

Now you can access files inside this path by just looking into MY:-assign, for example:

dir MY:
ed MY:myfile.txt

AFAIK, PrepCard is intended to prepare MEMORY cards. In the CNET package there is a device query utility (I don't remember its name) that correctly detects my Ovislink Ethernet PCMCIA card, I don´t know if 3Com drivers have such an utility. Simply don't trust PrepCard, and try alternative comm PCMCIA query utilities.

It does require a key...but they're unavailabe 'legally'.

You will also need MUI to use Miami...and that will probably
require fastram.

You 'may' need amigasamba (amigasamba.org) in addition
to Miami in order to fileshare with the PC. I have no
experience with samba though so I'm not sure.

Says that it's connected to pin 5 of Gayle.  I've counted on the pic, and it looks like pin 7 (from the right hand side) ?


Also there is CardReset on Aminet that _does_ work, saving all that hassle with the hardware patch.
