A3000 battery
« on: March 24, 2003, 08:02:30 PM »
I replaced my A3000 battery.  You need a 50 to 75 watt soldering iron with a small  tip.  Remove the motherboard.  Heat the solder connection of one of the battery connectors from the underside of the board and when the solder melts, you will be able to remove the connector.  Do the same with the other connector.  You will now  be confronted with the two connector holes in the motherboard obstructed with solder.

Now you need to have or acquire a solder remover which is a small spring loaded pump with a pointed tube on the end.  You load the pump by pushing a lever.  You'll probably need help for the next step.  Heat the solder in one of the connector holes from the back of the board while your girlfriend presses the tip of the solder remover on the same hole but on the other side.  When the solder liquifies, your gilfriend pulls the trigger and suck the solder out!  Do the other hole, tin the connectors on the new battery, and it is a simple matter to solder it in. :-o  :-o

I've always wanted to try to cut out the battery, then run some leads to a external (from the MB) battery, maybe even to outside of the case via a 3.5mm connector.  Use some nicads? I forget the voltage, tho'

Is this something that is simple enough that a person who has never soldered anything before can do?  The price that some of the shops charge for a battery replacement is ridiculous.  Is it possible to put a removeable mount in there?  Again the repair shop said it wasn't possible.  Any thoughts?

I just replaced the battery in my A3000.
The battery part is very easy. Its what you
have to do to get to it.Totally disassemble
your machine. Which really isn't that bad.
Do it somewhere AWAY from the kids. Lay things
out as you take them out and when in doubt mark
it by writing on masking tape and stick it to the
part. Remove the mother board.
With a soldering gun (mine--K Marts <$11.00>)
and a plastic screwdriver or something simular,
gently pry up on the battery as you heat the
bottom side of the motherboard connection.
When the solder is hot enough the connection
will come out. Do the same for all 3 connections.
To replace the battery, just hold the battery
connector in the slot and heat the solder again
until the connector slips all the way in. Do
the same to all 3 connections and you are done.
Put the machine back togother again.
WARNING.. make sure you have the right kind of
battery. My A3k is/was a rechargable and I replaced it with a "Lithium" without disabling
the charging circuit. Not good..it killed the
battery. I have to change the battery again.
Its not hard..just use care.
