Difference between Scanmagic - FLickermagic ?
« on: September 10, 2005, 01:19:30 PM »
Hi all,

Not really a hardware problem, but it's hardware related.
Could anyone tell me what's the difference between a internal dce scanmagic and the internal dce flickermagic? I bought a scanmagic and noticed a little bit later there was also the flickermagic. Tried to google but to no avail. Amiga hardware databse and the Big book also didn't list the (hardware) differences between the two.

Hope someone can clarify this.

Thanks,

az

I don't really know. The name would suggest one has a flicker fixer while the other is only a scandoubler.

But I beleive mine is called scanmagic and it does have a flicker fixer. Strange.

I took a look at the pictures on amiga hardware database and the big book and couldn't find any differences. But why would they give the same thing different names? On amiga hardware database they list some extra functions for the flickermagic, so that makes me think there must be indeed some differences. But maybe I'm wrong and they really are the same.

Don`t know about the internel version, but the external version really had a difference. Exactly as suggested, the scanmagic is a mere scandoubler while the flickermagic compensates the flicker of interlaced modes too.
The only difference you could see without looking into the logicchips itself would be soem RAM-chips that hold the buffered image.

Here is an old ad, that says I`m right

Not really interesting, but it`s there.

The price difference suggests there is a difference. I guess I'll have to try an interlaced mode to find out it I've got a scanmagic or a flicckermagic. But somehow this difference should also be visible from the outside, like the rom-chips you mentioned.

The price of scandoublers hasn't really dropped in the last few years. Just saw an external one being sold on ebay for 105E and that's a lot more than 149 DM.

There is 2 versions of this scandoubler from what i can see,, one plugs onto the alice and one onto the lisa,
One just has a 15pin output, the other has a passthrough to 15, so you plut it externally onto the monitor port with a ribbon going into the case.. Some sort of hack to your case is needed.

I have been trying to work this out for a couple of weeks..
