Removing the old barrel battery from my......

What is the easiest way to remove  old barrel battery from my A3000 without damaging the MB?
The connectors seems to be fastened on the battery in some way...............

I don't know where exactly the battery is placed
in the 3000..
In my 4000 I had to remove the whole Mobo
and then de-solder the battery...

The A3000 is the same as the 4000, you have to remove the motherboard and desolder the battery from underneath (the "legs" are welded to the battery, it's not in a holder). If you're worried about corrosion and can't desolder the battery yourself another option is to clip the "legs" with a pair of snips. Then when you can get it into the shop a technician can remove the stubs left behind and put in a new battery.

The computer will run fine without at battery BTW.

Don't remove the battery unless you have to (like if it is furry and leaking).  I removed the battery from an A4000 last year and it never worked again, even though it was perfectly good before.

Well if I don't remove it I'll probably forget about it and then it will leak and destroy my A3000

Best thing to do is remove the battery and solder a couple of jumper pins in there.  That way you can hook wires up to them that go to a new battery.  Plus, you'll be able to put the battery nearly anywhere in the case FAR AWAY from the motherboard.  That's what I did.  Works great and it will be easy to replace when the current battery starts leaking.

The battery will most definately leak.

I might add that if I were replacing a battery on a 3k mobo i would use a coin battery.

Yep, those legs are spot welded to the battery, so remove it by resoldering from the motherboard, or carefully cutting the 3 legs close to the motherboard.

Another good alternative battery is to use a 3.6V Ni-MH cordless phone battery.  They're cheap and easy to get.  Just cut of the 2 pin plug, and solder the two wires to the points where the old battery used to be.
Watch the polarity.
On the A3000, the black wire goes to the single hole (nearest the monitor jack) and the red wire connects to either of the two side-by-side holes.

Come to think of it... the cordless phone battery is probably the best. You got plenty of room in the case.

Silverdragons idea about jumpers is good.

To remove  the old battery if it's the barrel type, with 3 soldering points, first desolder (From the overside of the motherboard) the end of the battery with one solder point, then bend the battery up a bit so you can desolder one of the remaining two.  I did this on one of my 4000's yesterday :-)

No need to remove the motherboard, but you will need to get one of those soldering-lead(?) suckers. (Sorry, bad english) :-) to suck the holes empty, so you can fit the new battery, altough Silverdragon's idea was good. :-)

Maplins, Farnel or RS in the UK sell Varta batteries which are a direct replacement for the Solder in ones in the A4000 / A3000.
Replace it or it **WILL** eat into your board over time.

Well  i've changed the batteries on the A4000, A4000T, A3000T and it took me more time to take machines apart and put together again then actually soldering the battery.

Use a solid worksurface, and mark down on paper what leads go where otherwise you switch on and find your floppy drive doesnt work or something stupid like that.
Also a good time to clean the inside case and vacum your motherboard..

I was looking at phone batteries today. I don't like them. I saw another post around here somewhere. The guy said that he fried his battery because he went with a Lithium battery and forgot to disable charging on his A3000. Well I gotta tell you that I like the lithium idea better than the NiCad and most Phone batteries are NiCad and they suck. The Lithium Barrell would be the easiest route.

Coin battery is the best in my opinion. Take an old 486-P4 motherboard or a dead 4000T and a blow torch. Torch the underside of where the coin battery socket is and pry it with a toothpic or wooden tapered embossing pin (I usually just pull on it with my fingers but some folk are squeemish). DON'T USE THE BLOWTORCH ON THE GOOD MOTHERBOARD. It can be a little smelly too so you need to do this outside. The Coin battery socket has two pins instead of three but thats good. Make sure of orientation when placing the new socket in place of the old barrell battery holes. You only need to use one of the holes on the negative side and the lone hole for the positive side of the socket. (I think I've got that right from memory). Now just dab some solder on the underside of the PCB where the new socket pins come through and your done.

Ok, I don't know about the recharging thing. You don't want a charge on this new coin battery. If anyone can add info on that, I'm sure it will be usefull information. Without a A3000 board in  front of me, It would be dificult for me to trace it. I would assume you need to clip or desolder a transisitor somewhere but there may actually be a jumper.

I have an A4000 that has both a Coin battery and a header for the big PC AT type lithium battery.
came factory original that way.

Remove old batteries they leak and cause all kinds of hate and discountent.

Just cut the leads.
The battery is just for the clock. nothing more
