People upgrading or updating for OS4 ?
« on: March 24, 2003, 12:42:09 PM »
Hi,

This is intended for people that followes (or plans to follow) the OS4 way.

Just to know, what will you do ? :
- keep your Cyberstorm PPC card on your Amiga and buy AmigaOS4
- buy an AmigaOne + OS4

Thanks.

I'm going for the A1 approach. Although the idea of upgrading my A1200 with PPC is nice , that approach is too expensive from my position. Then again your question was largely aimed at users who currently own classic PPC amigas.

I'm buying an AmigaOne, which will be my main system once OS4 is up and running on it. I will keep my A1200 for older games, at least until someone develops a good AGA emulation layer for OS4. Probably, I will downgrade it somewhat (removing the BlizzardPPC, for example:-)).

Perhaps you should ask this over at Amigaworld, I think there are more of us OS4 people there.

with a bit of luck I will be keeping my classic PPC amiga and getting an A1 which will run OS4. I havent decided on OS4 for my classic yet, it all depends on my financial situation when OS4 launches, if I dont have much money it will have to be classic OS4. But I would much prefer an A1+OS4 :-). I look forward to having Mork (A1) and Mindy (1200 PPC) running next to each other :-)

I will be using OS4 on my A1200 BlizzardPPC until next year. After which I will be getting the biggest A1 (A2 perhaps ). Having said that, Alan was on about an A1-Lite, now depending on what it turns out to be, the size and the cost of it, I may get it b4 if it is cheaper then current models.

At most I'll be getting some more RAM for the A1200, if i can find it 2 sticks of 128Mb, but prob have to settle for 2 sticks of 64Mb.

I will go for both of them (A1+C.PPC),

I hope to get fairly cheap (?) CyberstormPPC
once people start upgrading, but maybe most
people will keep their classic ppc's, I know
I would....

I'm going to wait until AmigaOS4 is completed and hopefully be able to buy an official boxed copy of it and potentially run it on a Pegasos II based system. :-D

Not having PPC nor gfx-card in my A4000@060 (and it being
notoriously flakey when least expected), I'll get an AOne G4-XE.

I'll happily run Linux on it until AOS4 comes out. I have
waited this long - I'll be damned if I gave it up now when
there is actually weeks between the news items rather
than months... :-)

Hi Elwood,

My A1-G4 is already pre-ordered, and I'm looking forward to getting it.  Whenever that'll be.  I'll still be keeping my A4kT around until all the software I require runs properly on the A1.  Then it's going to become an mp3/image server for the A1 and PowerBook.

Which may be fine for a power user as yourself, but it doesn't compare to the Amiga A1200 experience. Plug-in, turn on.. boot up. You don't even need a hard drive (though its nicer with one). And software runs off floppy. Wouldn't a modern system with bootable CD-ROMs have similar functionality? :-D

For myself, I prefer to NOT touch Linux at all. I'm NO fan of Linux. (Of ALL the operating systems Linus had to copy.. he had to choose to make a UNIX clone when he really should have developed an AmigaOS clone. Oh well..)

Anyway, several years ago I preordered a Cyberstorm PPC accelerator card (Paid around $1500 for it & $400 for the 060 CPU).

It worked nicely, however, there was no software that supported the PPC, so I eventually sold it (then like 2 months after I sold it software for PPC appeared! Go figure!).
