Install 3.1 KS ROMs, Damn A4K CPU Board !
« on: March 22, 2003, 12:44:16 PM »
Hiya

Do I *have* to remove the damn '040 radiator to gain acces to the nylon clip holder underneath it, in order to remove this CPU board ??

And if yes, how to do it ? I's not made like a regular PC fan holder, and there seem to be no "hole" to put a screwdriver innit and pull it off... I don't want to 'improvise' ;-)  on this beautiful MoBo...

Is there a way to take off those plastic clips "nicely" ?

I knew the boxed Miggys were tightly crowded, but this !

Can someone post info about removal of this board with minimum hair loss ? :nervous:

Thank you !

Just pull the A3640 cpu board straight up, the nylon clip shouldn't break.

...?But ...

It won't go, at least using reasonable force...

See, those clips are... Erm, clipping the thing !

I tried to provide ASCII sketch but you cannot use "pre" tags, that sux  :-P

Thing is, it seems I have to PINCH the top of the clips to lift the board up. It makes sense, I've seen this before. Fact is, this board won't move, it's *secured* in place  8-)

Well.

To do so, I have to get rid of the radiator. Have somebody did this ?

thanx

Yes you have to pinch the plastic clips before lifting the board up, just be carefull not to break the board.

Is this radiator (the big black thing on the CPU) affixed to it or on the board ?

I looks fixed to the CPU by this metal band, so I should really plug this assemblage (radiator+'040) off by lifting it up ?

Wow, that's quite stress-inducing, just to change ROMs 8-)

Just put your finger under the cpu board,
it is a easy thing thing to remove the cpu board.
Removing the kick chips is another matter.
I advice, remove the front cover of the A4K
put a screw (philips) to a hole in the front and put it under a chip, try careful lift a chip a little bit and then remove it.

If the heat sink (radiator) is set up like pentiums are then there should be a mtal band over it strapping it down,  the band will clip onto the motherboard, I usually seem to have to use a screwdriver to unclip it.  Then the heat sinnk should still stick on as it will have been pasted too, to whatever chip is under there (04 or ROM, what why would a ROM chip have a heat sink...)

And with Socket 7 and under devices, there is a little lever you have to pull up.

Don't try to remove the CPU heat sink - it shouldn't be in the way. There are four of the plastic standoffs, all you MAY have to do is pinch the "split" top together to make it easier to pull the board off. Be careful not to wiggle the board too far from side to side or you'll damage the connector at the right hand side and make it intermittent.

A small flat blade screwdriver is the best tool to get the ROMs out (if you haven't a proper chip remover).

Proper Tools:
Old computers had more chips socketed, since they often broke. Its a big pair of tweezers with the ends bent in to go under the chip basically. Wonderfully helpful though in the right situation. I can imagine some of the older Amigas leaning towards the socketed chips side for the old computers reason.
