Been awhile since I looked, but I am pretty sure that PS2 has emulators for Amiga and Commodore 64.  So I'd still be doing Amiga gaming.

I do use my Amiga 1200 to get on the internet sometimes, but I would call the experience overrated.  I also can get on the Internet with my SX-64, and altough options are more limited, the mear fact that I'm connected at all is amazing.  Now with a new operating system (Contiki) for the unexpanded Commodore 64 that gives a multitasking GUI and soon PPP support, I can just use that for my secondary internet use.

@DarthX:
Yup...  It's from "The Big Snit". ;)

I'll need to make a cleaner version of it since I've got that one, "Getting Started" (the bored guy trying to practice piano) and "The Cat Came Back" on DVD.

There are some great games for the amiga.

If your into strategy, settlers and dune II are real good

Racing games, then skidmarks 2

Adventure , simon the sorcerr and monkey island series

Your right however, it wouldn't be worth spending the money to update the machine, though a hard drive would be a good, cheap investment, u can then get whdload or jst to put alot of game to HDD and make them compatible with the A1200

As to the PS2, gamecube argument.

I have played both alot.  The graphics on the gamecube are alot clearer and not blurred like PS2(propbably something to do with ATI doing the graphics chips in the GG)

The dvd player on a PS2 aint all its cracked up to be, some titles dont work, dont work properly etc.

U cant play videoCD on them

give ur missus a good backhander :) (only joking)
and get a gamecube, much more fun games

wouldnt get a PS2 right now the graphics are fairly obselete.

Which has got nothing to do with playability. There are more good games on PS2 than on XBox and GC together, just because of the larger gamebase.

Plus, XB and GC ain't got no GT3 :)

and if the A1200 is "just" A1200, sell it and get that PS2. Brings a lot more joy

Xbox is made by microsoft... so what?... Amiga.inc's partnered with microsoft... most of you dont have any qualms with supporting amiga.inc

I dont see anything wrong with Xbox

and although it has less games it has alot more bang-for-the buck ...

it's got the best audio of any console

it can play DVD's

it can play music CD's.

it's got the best graphics quality

and it can run an OS (linux)

I know that the PS2 can also play DVD's and run Linux and has many games... but it's slower... and it's games are mainly obselete graphically.

I love playing games with good graphics quality...If I where to buy one I'd buy the XBox or if I went for 'game play' I'd buy the Nintendo...

PS2 may have GTA3 but i dosent have DOA beach vollyball... and thats a big downside ;P

It's your choice. I loved my PS2. I wanna get another one as soon as I find a better job than the one I have now. If your remember, the PS was anything short of extraoridnary when it arrived. They hammered the chips on that bastard like they did the Miggy back in the day. Sony doesn't screw around with it's chipset. The PS2 can hold it's own for a few more years, believe me.

Do whatever you need  to do, to make yourself happy. I don't currently own an amiga, but that doesn't make me any less an AMIGAN.  :-D

I wouldn't buy a GameCube, stores in the UK are getting rid of them for £79 now.

X-box is just a cheap PC really, I can't help but think M$ will try their "tactics" with the gaming community and we'll soon see (too soon for the traditional gamers) X-Box 2 then X-Box 3. They may try to commit users into a fast upgrade cycle and wean them into M$ extras/services. They don't understand gamers though, they typically aren't PC sheeple, and they clearly got the Japan market wrong, a console so big it won't fit in a typical Japanese house, LOL, with crap, huge controllers.

PS2 is without doubt the market leader presently so you will not be in any shortage of games. I have seen some incredible gfx on it (later parts of Devil May Cry, FF-X etc.) Technically it is the weakest, sure, but that doesn't seem to matter in the marketplace!

As far as the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox argument goes, here's my few cents' worth: I bought a PS2 a while back. There are boatloads of games for it, but I never found any that I liked on it, so I sold it on ebay.

I've tried the Xbox. Everybody raves about it, but the graphics and animation on my Gamecube are just as good. And though there are more games for the Xbox, there weren't any (other than Halo) that appealed to me. Pretty much any game that's worth getting is coming out for the Xbox and GC now, with the PS2 slowly being phased out.

As far as technology goes, an engineer at MicroSoft has stated that they believe that the only competition the Xbox has is the GC, as the PS2 is built on dated hardware. Sony, in fact, is planning to replace their aging technology within 2 years with a PS3. They'd be doing themselves a favor to release it sooner, though.

However, if you're looking for a DVD player, the GC won't do you any good. The PS2 isn't a great DVD player, but it is functional (unlike the Xbox, where you have to buy a separate remote control).

Just my thoughts on my experiences...

Forgot to mention my setup so here it is:

Amiga 1200 in original case
GVP A1230-II 40mhz 030 board with 8 meg GVP RAM and External SCSI option
External SCSI cd-rom (1 or 2x)
KS3.1 with OS3.1, 3.5 and 3.9
Commodore VGA adaptor, but I dont use it because I use this for games mostly, using with 1084 monitor
That's pretty much it.  I have a few original games and a Vidi 12 digitizer.

I'm still leaning towards the PS2 . . .

If you really don't want to keep the A1200 I'd get a PS2 with a Linux kit. That would be cool :)

I would either need a simple bootdisk or something that is totally transparent.

I'm a big console freak.

The only console I have that I dislike is the PS2.

The game selection is crappy (quantity is great, but quality is few and far between).  The graphics are between good and bad (whereas Xbox and Gamecube would be "excellent") and many games have a framerate that's so low it's unbearable.

There are a few gems, such as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Splashdown, but in general I'd say it sucks. And it's really really noisy too.

As a matter of fact I still prefer my Dreamcast over my PS2. By far even. The game catalogue kicks the PS2 all the way to hell and back and often the games look way nicer on the Dreamcast too.

It's kind of hard to get hold of new games for the Dreamcast now though, and that's really the only reason why I wouldn't recommend it unconditionally.

Instead I'll point towards the Xbox and the Gamecube. The Gamecube has a couple of really good first-party games and a lot of support from SEGA. Obviously it gets the classic Nintendo titles, which is always good. The Xbox is where the action is at if you want awesome graphics, brilliant games (Halo, Jet Set Radio Future, Splinter Cell, Mechassault, Amped, Oddworld, DoA 3, Morrowind, Gunvalkyrie, Rallisport Challenge and besides those (and many more) there are also the titles that are coming for all three platforms. Besides Xbox does have the ultimate ace up its sleeve: Xbox Live. The headset works so well it's unreal. Can't wait for Phantasy Star Online.

Forget who made it - it's the best contemporary console out there that you can buy today. It's all about the games.
