Should I sell my A1200 and get a PS2?
« on: March 21, 2003, 03:48:34 PM »
Hello,

I've been using my A1200 less and less these days and keep thinking I might sell it and get a PS2 instead.  I just got this A1200 for Christmas...  I've found several games on the net to use with it, but I usually have to reboot to set PAL video or disable caches, which is really annoying.  People praise XTreme Racing and other car games I've tried, but I've just not found any games that I'm particularly fond of yet.  I get tons of hours of "Retro Gaming" out of my Commodore SX-64 all the time still, but I just havent been as impressed as I thought I would be with my Amiga.  Hardware is expensive, and software just to get on the internet is crippleware.

Can anyone convince me to keep this thing, or am I gonna be better off with a PS2?

Thanks,

Neofree

I wouldnt get a PS2 right now the graphics are fairly obselete.

I would however take a look at an XBox or a GameCube, both of wich have some incredible titles and the graphics are incredible.

Keep in mind though that the PS2 is still way ahead of the Amiga in terms of 3D gameing and such, if it's really a toss up... the question is 'wich will be more fun' ... for someone like me... the Amiga would be more fun... for someone looking for a pure game expierance the PS2 would be more fun.

Depends on what you do, i would say for fun keep the A1200 but if your a hardcore gamer and want to play the latest games (not old ports) get a PS2 (chipped).

I'll never get an XBox.  I don't care what the specs are and what titles are for it.  I just don't like supporting Microsoft.

I have a long time fondness of Nintendo and some of their classic games/series, but I've read more then once that the PS2 actually had better graphics then the GameCube.  Plus the GameCube doesn't use standards like the PS2 does. (CD/DVD)  And there are more PS2 games, and my wife doesnt want to get a GameCube.  Basically if I get anything it's a PS2, or keep my Amiga.

I guess it wouldnt be so bad if I wasnt spending so much time just getting games to work on my A1200.  The main purpose I got it is so I can play games with my son, but he's lost interest in it because I spend more time trying to make games work then actually playing them.  And when they do work they're like, "All this for that".  Keep in mind I've not had a deep rooted history in Amiga as many others have had, but have had Amiga's over the years.  I want to find a reason to keep this, don't get me wrong, but I'm just having a hard time with it.

I'd get the nintendo then. If its for you and your son to have some fun with, the nintendo is the best option I think since you dont want an XBox,

the nintendo has alot of very nice titles with good quality graphics, the games are 'friendly' moderate titles.

that or get a PC and a rom emulator, then he can play all the games he wants ;P

When you say PS2 (chipped), I know what you mean but do you recommend any particular chip?  I looked at that a bit yesterday and I am wondering which is OK to use.  It appears that if you use the "swap" method with the GameShark 2 or AR2 you could damage your PS2 if you're not careful.  This is just not something I could do in my home.  I would either need a simple bootdisk or something that is totally transparent.

My cousin has a PS2 chipped with a Matrix 2 chip and it boots everything she throws at it, took me ages to solder the bastard but well worth it.

You have to love Backups  :-P

Nowadays somewhere around 40 quid or slightly lower or higher, costs more for wires already soldered on , if you have a local computer fair buy it from that as many shops will rip you off with premium prices.

I am recommending this chip with the understanding that your not a filthy pirate hiding behind the term "Backups"  :roflmao:

That's a weird question...

Umm... Are you looking to play games?  Is there anything else you wanted to do with it?  What configuration is your A1200?

As for other software, have you looked into Back 2 Roots?
http://www.back2roots.org/ ?  They have a large collection of "abandomware" .

Do you have another computer?  Perhaps UAE might be a better use for you...  You can look into AmigaForever from cloanto.  I believe they have a package where you can purchase the Legal ROMS & OS for them if you are planning on using UAE on something other then their supported platforms.

As for the PS2?  I've got one, although I've been playing more with my Dreamcast and GameCube. ;)  My PS2 mostly serves as a second DVD player. ;)

@mips_proc

Why would anyone want to buy an XBOX and support the evil empire? ( oh wait.. I'm part of that evil empire aren't I? ) :-D
Surely there will be a PC *xbox emulator* sometime soon...

But on a PS2, isn't it possible to run linux, and therefore UAE (A1200 emulator) ?

Now a Gamecube is PowerPC based.. hmmm....
