A Prodigal son starts the journey back
« on: August 19, 2005, 08:31:20 PM »
Hi folks.

Used to enjoy my Amiga but fell by the wayside many years ago and didn't get another machine till after 2000 (sadly a windows box) and having grown increasingly frustrated with it and coupled with uncovering my old a1200 while housecleaning thought it might be time to return back to the fold.

It is just a vanilla a1200 but I look forward to upgrading it into something a bit more useful and bugging all of you more knowlegeable people for help while doing so.

Andy

Hi,

Welcome to A.org! Does your vanilla A1200 have a hard drive or is it completely vanilla?

A hard drive increases usability massively - grab a cheap old second-hand laptop drive and you'll be away! eBay is your friend - you may be able to also get a 68030 or better accelerator with some RAM on board.

I guess it's all down to how much you want to spend, plus what you intend doing with your Amiga.

It's all good fun, and before you know it, you'll have spent tonnes on it and ended up with loads more Amigas! Or is that just me?! :-)

Welcome to Amiga.org!  I'd recommend an accelerator card and some fast memory to bring that A1200 up to speed.  As for WHICH card to get, that's always the trick.

I've got a Blizzard 1230 in mine with a SCSI adapter hooked up to a malfunctioning SCSI hard drive, and better functioning SCSI CD-ROM drive.  For the price the best way to hook a CD-ROM drive up to an A1200 is probably a buffered port splitter for the IDE interface.  SCSI is so expensive nowadays.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the Power Supply that comes with an A1200 is weak.  An AT power supply with adapter is much better.

If you need any further advice just drop back in to Amiga.org and we'll try to answer all of your questions!

The amiga is totally vanilla - no hard drive at all.  It is the first thing earmarked for purchase. I have been perusing ebay as well as lurking in the forums for a few days before registering and already picked up enough bits of useful information.

Of course this close to payday there are no spare funds.  Thankfully only a few days till that's not an issue.

Thanks for the info guys and the warm welcome.
