Hey all, getting back into things
« on: August 04, 2005, 03:40:07 PM »
'lo there :) I first got my a500 in the late 80's, and a few years after won a free a1200 from a magazine contest, then over the years I've retired them both to my closet but am now interested in getting an '030 board and a scandoubler to get back into some old school gaming!! I can't wait, just I know it will be difficult to get these parts and everything off ebay is from UK/Europe, virtually nothing available from the US.. What most excites me is being able to finally play ALL of those games that my poor vanilla a1200 could not play and to catch up on those games I never even knew about :)

cheers

Techx

Welcome to amiga.org. :-)

Try http://www.amibench.org for some more decent prices. A good deal shows up there sometimes, however you need to be fast enough to spot it. :-)

eBay is probably the most likely place to find good, but 99% of times pricey Amiga hardware nowadays. You are right, most of the good stuff is available from overseas, but if the seller wants to ship worldwide, then I don't see a problem. Place your bid.

Finally, there's me and my stash of hardware, however my prices are in eBay range. :-D

@Techx

If you're posting this from a PC then you might be able to just dump the ROM image to a file and then run it in WinUAE.  It'll save you the expense of a scandoubler and you'll probably be able to run Picasso96 to get some hardware-native screenmodes as well.  Of course P96 won't help with games that aren't RTG capable but many times the emulator will be able to beat the price of native hardware and ESPECIALLY a scandoubler since they are rare and expensive unless you get one of the game-system oriented ones.

Yes, I already have winuae installed and played a game or two.. but I don't know, there's just something nice about using an actual amiga, running all the games off the hard drive, using WB, going through my old floppies (if they haven't degraded by now :), without having to mess with the headaches of emulators and which settings work for which games, you know? It certainly is much more expensive to upgrade my a1200, but I think it is worth it :)

Thanks

Amen! I Agree! That's why I got my Amiga's back.... UAE is nice, really nice, but not nearly as good as the real thing :)

*I* am not putting anything up my nose. That picture is of the lead singer of the band Lush, Miki Berenyi. She was an avid amiga user in the day. Met her at a show back in 1994, where we proceeded to get drunk and talk about old amiga games.

I used to like lush back in the 90's, I even went to a few ride/lush shows and went backstage and met Miki.. she was really drunk, funny stuff.. Ride was great too, was my fav. band for a while there but this is what, 10+ years ago, I don't even remember how long :) As for Miki being an amiga user I had no idea! that's pretty damn cool though :)

I've so far, still seen them more than any other band, with Nine Inch Nails being a close second. I found them in 1989. To this day, they still remain my favorite band.

And yes, she was an Amiga user. She owned an A500 at one point in time. That woman has an incredible tolerance to double bacardi and coke. My God. We sat around drinking after a show and kept spitting out sound samples from Turrican. *laughs* Nobody had any idea what we were talking about, but we found it humorous anyways.

*POWERUP*

I really miss them. They broke up right at the height of their popularity. Miki just had a baby boy a year ago. His name is Ivan. *sighs* I always wanted to marry her.
