a500 problem. What do these games have in common?
« on: July 09, 2005, 10:12:19 AM »
Hey everyone.

I bet you are all wondering why I am asking about games in the hardware section.
Well, it's because my a500 seems to have a problem with them.

I have varying degrees of success with different games. It seems like there is some unknown problem in hardware causing them to stuff up.

Here's a few games which don't work properly:

* Gem'X (gfx go scrambled and guru in game)
* Cannon Fodder (can't advance past loader)
* Theme park (playable. Ground tiles don't load and heaps of artefacts)
* Sink Or Swim (Can't start a game. menu works)
There are more I can't recall. It's always garbled graphics and then a guru.

Heres some that do:

* Prince of Persia
* Arkanoid
* Chase HQ
* Ghosts 'n Goblins

I haven't had any problems with apps. Even DP-IV works flawlessly. I have tried multiple sources of the games. Same errors. They work in an emulator with the same setup.

What could be the cause of my problems? I figure it's either the 512k ram expansion, 512k gfx memory, agnus or denise.

Doesn't Cannon Fodder and Theme Park require 1MB chip RAM?  I'm noticing by your signature that you have 512K...

I didn't realise that.
I could understand cannon fodder needing 1mb I guess.
If I ever get the $$$ I'll get the ecs agnus and denise. I know they don't cost much from vesalia, but it falls pretty low on my list of things that need money thrown at them.

If I could be bothered right now I'd try a few other games out. It's just a little time consuming copying across. Dumping to floppy is the easy part.

That's right... There's a game that came with the other a500 that glitches out too. I never tried it on the other a500 though. Only on my main one.The game is called 'star war'.

Can anyone suggest a game that is known to work with ks1.3 and 512k chip, 512k expansion?
I'll dump it across and see what happens. Too many things give similar results.

Nah Cannon Fodder worked fine on my (*old*) A500 1/2 mb fast, and 1/2 chip.

Given the nature of the errors, I'd suspect a harware error. On the other hand, other hardware hitting programs (like dpaint) seem to run fine; strange. You might try checking if all the chips are still properly mounted (press them firmly on the mobo). Other than that, I do not have a clue unfortunatly.
