A2000... how much should I pay?
« on: July 04, 2005, 01:11:52 PM »
Hi all,

I'm finally in the market for my first 'big box' Amiga and have found http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5215016791&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1">this one and I'm wondering how much I should pay.

I'm thinking $100AUD max.

Also, I think I may be at a disadvantage as it looks like I'll be bidding against someone who's http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=16303">been mentioned in this forum before.

What do we think ppl?

Sean.

Hmm, well for a 1.3 2000 (1.3 2000's are usually OCS only, not ECS) with no HD, and only one floppy drive, I wouldn't suggest going past $75 - $80.  I picked up two of them (one not working due to battery damage, but may be repairable), both with 2.0 and 2 floppy drives, 2 A2091 controllers with HD, a 1084 and a huge box of discs for $150.  Now, maybe I got a bargain, but I think that $100 is the absolute maximum I would pay for a single 1.3 A2000.  It looks like it's in fairly good cosmetic condition, but it appears to have the later leds - green and orange instead of red and green, so it might have had the case replaced.
As far as keving7209, well he appears to be a bit of a tool.  He's got a stack of money (or so it seems) and he's bidding on stuff and putting it wayyyy over the price it should be.  You never know though, you might get this for a good price, my best advice is just to snipe him  :lol:
As far as the A2000 goes, they're great machines, chuck a SCSI controller in there, a CD-ROM, perhaps a SCSI Zip drive and an 030 or something (still haven't gotten around to that last one  :-( ) and you'll have a great 2000.

Before bidding you should get the seller to check the floppy drive. He says he has no reason to believe it shouldn't work but, frankly, with old Amiga drives I have no reason to believe it does work until I've seen it.

If it doesn't work, it is an absolute PAIN!!!! I made that mistake with an A1000 I bid on... will get it fixed one day  :pissed:

What Amiga do you have at the moment?

You have to ask yourself what will an A2000 offer me over an A500 / 1200?

My personal opinion is "next to nothing".

There are much better Amiga things to spend your well earned dosh on than an A2000.

Like what?

If you have an Amiga A500 then the best buy is a GVP HD8+ with 8 Meg Fast RAM. (GVP A530 if you can afford one)

If you have an Amiga A600 the best buys are a 2.5" IDE disk  + PCMCIA Ethernet card + 1Mbyte Trap door.

If you have an Amiga A1200 then it's again 2.5" IDE disk, PCMCIA Ethernet card + Trap Door fast RAM / Accelerator.

Buying a Big Box Amiga 2000 will only give you a better Amiga experience IF you buy a Zorro GFX card and to use one you need an accelerator and a SCSI controller + Hard drive! Before you know it you've spent much more than you expected!

The A2000 is a really classic machine. I have two of them myself. The main reason for me is to use old software though. My a1200 is better suited for modern stuff.

Good: Separate keyboard. Expansion possible with Z2 slots inside the box. good for network cards and scsi.
Good compatibility if you want to run old games on it.

Bad: not good for graphics cards. The Z2 bus is really too slow for this. I've heard people say that the stock AGA in a1200/a4000 is faster than any graphics card in a Z2 slot.

Max ram expansion is 8MB of fast ram. If you put an accelerator card in it you can have more fastram than that.

I'd say hold out for an a3000, as it is basically an a2000 with most of the upgrades which really are required for practical usage. An inbuilt amber scandoubler/flickerfixer is a big bonus.

I probably wouldn't advise getting the a600 unless you are really in love with the form factor.  Without an a630 it is next to useless.

a500 with hd8 is a nice cheap option - picked up one for $20 AUD the other day and it works quite well (the whole setup is quite bulky however).

An a1200/a500+hd8 combo will give you most of what you are after... but if you really have your heart set on an a2000 - try get a rev 6 board at least and get some confirmation about the state of the battery.  Unexpanded, I'd say $80 at most (w/o monitor).

@alexh

I have:

A1200 - OS3.9, 030 @ 40Mhz, 32Mb RAM, 4.3Gb HD, 4xEIDE, external 8xCDROM, 10Mbit PCMCIA network and Commodore 1960 multiscan monitor. My 'serious use' machine.

A600 - No extra RAM (yet), 1.3Gb HD, occasionally plug in the 10Mbit PCMCIA network for downloads. My 'gaming-in-front-of-the-TV' machine.

A500 x 2 - one with 1Mb, still looking for a HD/RAM combo, http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5211915548">this one went a bit high for me which is a pity coz when I sold mine, just over a decade ago, with my A500 and some great games it was for less than that. But I really want a GVP A530.

CD32. Ouch. My 2nd 'gaming-in-front-of-the-TV' machine.

@BenShep

Yep, I like to get an A3000 someday too. And maybe an A4000.

Amigas are my hobby and nowadays I'm really only interested in 'collecting' them.
