My sister wants a laptop but as she does not know much about computers a friend at university is choosing it for her.

She plans on using it for internet including playing video clips and typing up essays.

She doesn't play games, has little interest in DVDs or graphics programmes, video editing and such like.

The laptop he has chosen is the Acer TravelMate 2702LCi

Do you think this would be suitable for her requirements?

I´d say that machine is a little overpowered for her needs..

My laptop is an AMD XP1800+ with 256MB RAM ( 32MB shared with graphics card ) and that is more than sufficient for the above.. I don´t use it for much more than that, but sometimes I watch an occasional DVD or DivX movie ( while traveling ) on it, and the machine doesn´t have any problems with that...

To summarize; I would have told her to buy a cheaper one, with a little less performance..

anything over 500mhz...with 512 mb memory.
so that it`ll run XP for the `security`...and run those memory hungry word programs...

That the good thing about yesterday’s technology….the masses don’t  want it , and you can pick them up just over hundred UK pounds.

If she's not into any particular software, doesn't mind if the CPU's a bit slow, but wants a laptop that looks good... don't forget the ibooks...

if you can afford it, buy it.  Dont buy some old, used laptop just because this one is too powerful.  What she may not use it for now (dvd playing, graphics etc) she may want to do later.

Otherwise you could show her the Apple iBook. I've the 12" version and I'm very very satisfied.
You only need to add some RAM and it works great!

In addition it is cheap and its features are very interesting. I can confirm you can work with battery for about 4 hours.

If you need, I can provide you any information about this "little jewel"  :-P

In addition to my previous message: as I said, it is a 12" laptop so it is little and light. Taking in mind also its battery's capacity, I think it can be a great choice for a student.

And... I can assure that girls feel on love when they see it  :-D

I agree with her getting a Mac.  You said she doesnt know about computer and the iBooks are great for that.OS X is a great OS to use.  Its easy to install apps and just as easy to remove them.Shou wont have to worry about virus or spyware infections, and they are priced to match others out there in spite of what others may say. Just dont get the RAM from Apple, get at least a  512MB upgrade though from a good RAM reseller.

a p4 3ghz is just overkill for any laptop. it will run hot as hell and deplete the battery quickly. And she doesn't need that processing power anyway. Try to find something which has a pentium M processor. That's cooler and very adequate for her needs (but little bit more expensive I guess). iBooks are also nice.

Nah, poo on the Apple laptops.  Get a laptop to run Windows on it.  Everything out there is practically for Windows.  More then likely thats all she/her friends/school use is Windows machines.

The missus has a Toshiba Sattelite Pro (that i purchased for her ... )

Its a 2.2Ghz Celeron CPU, 256 DDR , DVD/CDRW combo drive...

Works well, runs AF6 nice!

I think a 3ghz lappy for normal work is deffo overkill..

As a person who has a 3Ghz Laptop, I say this: it's not a mobile machine. It's a portable desktop...

It's big, it's hot, it's noisy, it's heavy and it thinks batteries grow on trees (you would be lucky to get 30mins on it).

If she wants a Windows machine then I can recommend the Centrino ones.

why does a powerful laptop have to be a desktop?  dont settle for second best.   do you know for a fact that the battery only asks for 30 minutes?  

get what you can afford and do look at the "M" series processors.

I have an Athlon64 3200+ with huge 1400x1050 screen, and I get between 2 and 3.5 hours out of the battery.
