OS4? MorphOS? Aros?
« on: June 23, 2005, 12:11:36 PM »
Hi,

i'm new to this forum, just came over to write this actually. But since it got no replies I was wondering what setup people have here, and what they intend to buy in the future. Is there any interest in OS4? What about MorphOS? Aros?

I have no interest in OS4 or MOS anymore since I will not be getting any hardware to run it on. Good old OS3.x for me and/or AROS.

I have an AmigaOne and I'm all for Os4, I'd only like to have more spare time for coding. I'm interested in Aros, too, since it would allow to have a native AmigaOs-compatible os on my x86 laptop, someday I'll give it a try.

@runetrek

Welcome to the forums.

In regards to your question, I would estimate that about 70% of our users probably have older, classic Amigas (whether they are using them or not), while the other 30% are divided pretty much equally between using an AmigaOne or a Pegasos.  Discount about 5% who're using AROS and I feel that's pretty accurate.

Web stats tell us that only about 9% of the browsers in use on Amiga.org are Amiga browsers, though as the people in denial will point out, a "lot of people" set their browsers (for whatever unknown reason) to spoof Internet Explorer so that they can get into most modern Web sites.

Well, I have MorphOS and already Papyrus. I do also have my Classic still around but I wont buy Papyrus for that. And OS4 doesnt run on my Pegasos, so...

Personally, I have no interest in buying "new" hardware that is of no use to me. So that rules out OS4 and MOS, I also have a personal opinion that an OS should be open source (I want to see what back doors and national security "features" are hidden in my system) not to mention I have a facination for OS design, so that puts me firmly into the AROS camp :-)

Since I have a bunch of classic amiga's, pcs and a mac, I want to run my hobby OS on all of those machine... again that is only filled by AROS.

@ DJBase

What do you think about the future for Pegasos/MorphOS? Would you have bought a Pegasos, knowing what you know now?

Well, I am not sure. It is hard for such a niche system to resist in the market. We are all waiting for MorphOS 1.5 Release and hope that the things will getting better a bit. There are some great apps in the pipeline for release too (BurnIT3, Pagestream5, Robin Hood,...).

For now I would, yes. I used before an Amiga4000 with PowerPC and G-REX full loaded. But the Pegasos can handle all the stuff better, is faster and of course even cheaper.

I'm considering buying a ODW to run Gentoo on..to set it up as a webserver/ftp server/ etc.  Why? I dunno.  Just to do it.  I have my webserver running at home, works perfect but wouldnt mind something different.

Can you do a dual boot Gentoo/MOS setup?
