OS 3.9 Free CD-ROM support?
« on: June 21, 2005, 03:06:05 PM »
I finally got OS 3.9 installed by using IDE Fix from WB 3.1.

The problem I have now is the fact that I thought OS 3.9 has CD-ROM support built into it, but when I want CD-ROM support it wants to install more shareware. Am I missing something?

??????

Could you be a litte more precise. I never saw OS3.9 ask for shareware.

Of course you have to remove IDEfix after you installed OS3.9 because IDEfix is shareware.

I'm quite sure that I kow what your problem is because, I had same problem, first check dh0:devs\dosdriver\cd0 with text editor there are probaly atapi.device and cachecfs.

Now it bit hard for me to remember how did I actually solved problem, but reason is when you installed cd-rom support you HAD a CD-rom support allready installed, intaller didn't overwrite old ones.

First what I remember sure, IF you have atapi.device in dh0:/devs/dosdrivers/cd0 just write it over with (you remember you have opened it with text editor?) scsi.device, don't worry you woun't find it it's inside of A OS 3.9 rom update

Now I don't remember do you need to delete cachecdfs allso, it might have came with IDEFIX paggage???

BUT copy whole "install cd support" directory from amiga os install cd to your hd before you start to delete anything

Well, OS3.9 does come with free CDROM support, but it doesn't come with any device drivers.

CacheCDFS is not shareware if that is what you mean by shareware. Back in the days it was a commercial product, but I believe the owner is/was part of the OS3.9 team.

I'll mess with it again. Currently if I pop in a CD. Two CD icons pop up on the screen...

FOr the note, my Emergency disk that it made also has IDEFix on it too. They should at least give you the option to overwrite your old CD handler. Gay.

Do you have a SCSI or IDE CDRom?
When I installed 3.9 on my A4000, it didn't
support my dataflyer SCSI interface and the
CDRom stopped working. I removed the SCSI
and installed and IDE CDRom and all was well again.

Running an external 3.5 CD-ROM externally from a chain (starting with my 2.5 HD) on my internal 1200 IDE port.

I've got a possible solution. If someone could make me an ADF disk image that will boot up the Amiga with CD-ROM support, but not with commercial software, maybe I'll be able to install OS 3.9 without hassel?

IIRC, it does.

But, you can just delete the CD and/or CD0 files from DEVS/DOSDrivers and then remove or rename IDEFix in C:.  Then run setup again and choose the Add CD-ROM Support.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

@XDelusion

No.  The demo/shareware is from the shareware IDEFix'97 you used.

If you use a DVD-Rom drive with the AmigaOS 3.9 CD-Rom driver you can read a DVD disc!

I don't know if this will help, but here's the way I did it.

I installed IDEFix97 on  WB3.1, then made an emergency disk using OS3.9.

I then installed using the emergency disk on to a clean system i.e. formated hard drives, then I get the shareware message come up for IDEFix97.
What I do then is just reinstall IDEFix97 and everything works prefect.

Not sure if this is the right way to do it, but works for me...

I have DVD drive and a CDRW,as well as an IDE HD, runnning fine like this.

@XDelusion

It is always recommended to install OS3.9 by using a Emergency Disk. This disk is bootable, and will load Workbench 3.9 from the CD. Install to a clean harddrive, and you haven't got any of the problems you are having now, as the two icons is because of two CD entries in Devs:DOSDrivers and Storage:DOSDrivers, and traces from IDEfix I believe.
