OS3.9 Icon Snapshoting
« on: June 19, 2005, 12:11:25 AM »
This is driving me mad, so I've decided to ask you guys to see if you can shed any light on it.

I have an install of OS3.9 using a voodoo3 in 1024x786 and I have 9 hd partitions. I snapshot them in one big line from the top of the screen to the botom. Then I reboot and they only display in a line down to what I can only assume is the point where a 320x256 display would be. Ie no mater where snapshoted Icons will only display in the correct place if they are snapshotted in the 320x256 area.

Now if I reboot by my Emergency partition, which has a slightly older install (very slightly) and all the icons appear in the correct places. So they are definately snapshotting correctly.

This means that the problem has to be something to do with the icons being positioned at bootup, but I haven't a clue why.

I've checked for programs that might draw up a 320x256 screenmode in the bootup process, found nothing.

My startup script on the emergency partition is exactly the same as the one on my main partition.

This is driving me mad. Does anyone have any clues?

yeah the ram disk icon is at the top. then I get the first 3 drives, then the next four on a column to the right, then the next 3 in the next column to the right.

If I reboot from the emergency partition they all lign up in one column

Well, not exactly that problem, but something similiar.  I've got AmigaForever (3.9) running PowerIcons, and I can set the icons on my Workbench (RAM: WORK: SYSTEM: etc..) and they work with the new PNG icons.  But when I reboot, they are back to the old glow icons, however, I can select the icon properties and it still shows the PowerIcons image inside of the box.. THAT is driving me nuts.

but, sorry . . .  its obvious the if you boot from the Emergrncy disk, the snapshop done under an HD AmigaOS installation, will go lost.

Start the system from the EmergencyDisk and then snapshot the icons from there. (take the Emergency Disk writable)

There are other reason for this behaviour (ie some hidden partition set with Workbench Prefs)

EDIT- when you say "i boot from EmergencyDisk", you mean with the EmergencyDisk+CDROM? . . . even worse. You can't.

@Herewegoagain

what you see is the ENV:Sys/def_disk.icon, right?

Open the Icon Information, drag the desired PNG icon inside and Save.

Have you copyed by hand, a disk.icon (PNG) for every partition? That's no good.

You have to start PowerIcons from user-startup. If you start it from WBStartup, desktop icons won't show PNG icons. That's documented in the manual.

Bye,
Thomas

@framiga

No, by emargency partition I mean a bog standard hd partition with a clone of my workbench partition on it.

No hidden partitions.

@Framiga

Yeah, I guess so.  But I didn't copy anything by hand.  I always opened the icon properties and dropped the PNG icon there.  It shows it on the Workbench until I reboot, then it reverts back..  But I don't want to hijack this thread and make it about my issues.  Just saying that I have a similiar kind of problem.

sorry lorddef but Herewegoagain problem seems interesting.

Have you put the PowerIcons line in SS before LoadWB? (as pointed by Thomas) with the latest 1.06 version?

Run >NIL: PowerIcons SCROLLSPEEDUP NOGHOSTSELECT GHOST=100 SELR=96 SELG=80 SELB=80 TEXTMODE=2

LoadWB

EndCLI >NIL:

Feel free to play with options

@Thomas

You are correct.  I did read the instructions, but apparently not well enough (or it just wasn't sinking in). I had PowerIcons starting from WBStartup (Don't do that!).  I put this line in my user-startup:

Run >NIL: Work:PowerIconsInstall/PowerIcons

and now it works just as I want.  The icons stay in place evertime.  The only thing I had to do extra was once setting the icon to use on the Ram: was to

Copy Ram:disk.info system:prefs/env-archive/sys/def_ram.info

:-)

Thanks for making me look at that again Thomas.  And thanks for the other suggestions Framiga.

Now, back to LordDefs problem...

Re: OS3.9 Icon Snapshoting -- Getting Stranger

So I've just copied my entire workbench bartition to my Emergency partition. So now bot partitions have exactly the same files on them. I boot up from the Emergency partition and all the Icons line up okay, then I boot up from the workbench partition and its all screwed up!

So it has to be something to do with the ways the disks are formatted!!!!

Both partitions are formatted with the same filesystem (ffs v45.13) and the only difference is that my workbench disk is 500meg and the emaegency one is 2gig.

Any ideas people?

This is weird, how can a filesystem/partition affect the way icons are placed at boot-up????
