Memory jungle for SX-1 ...
« on: June 17, 2005, 06:49:45 PM »
Hello,

This is really the jungle when searching memory SIMM for my SX-1  :-?

It appears that the 72 pins slot supports only one single-sided memory SIMM. My problem is that this is very difficult to find 8 MB single-sided SIMM  :pissed:

So, my questions :

1 - Can I install 16 MB single-sided memory SIMM used as 8 MB one (selected as 8 MB by configuring jumpers) ? If YES, will the memory be reconized by softwares ?

2 - Is "no-parity" and/or "no-ECC" SIMM very important ?

Thank's for advices

Alexandre

Hum,
i dont think the controller can see the `parity` bits on a chip - so it doesn`t matter.
I think ppl just bought the non-parity ram `cos it was cheaper.

As for the size i`m sure that only the first 8 Mb can bee seen, any more memory is ignored.

Thank's for this quick response.

Now, it's clear for the parity or no-parity of the SIMM. I'm sure you're right  :-)

About module size, if I understand, I can plug 16 MB SIMM in the slot, of course, the first 8 MB will be seen but it could work fine  :-?

Somebody could confirm ?  :-?

Is it truly double sided that's the restriction, or double banked? They often get mixed up in the mac world, don't know if they do here or not :)

Dana,

No, the double-sided SIMM is not a logical restriction but a physical one  :pissed:

I think the memory controler is able to configure and use double-sided memory modules but, in fact, there is a chip in a slot witch stop the complete placement of double-sided SIMM  :pissed:

This is the reason why I'm looking for another solution (16 MB single-sided SIMM use like 8 MB).

Subject always open  :-?

Why not but are you sure these modules are 8 MB single-sided ?
