Bad Checksum Error on my HD...
« on: June 12, 2005, 02:35:22 AM »
Hey guys.  I've just recently gotten a bad checksum error on a certain block on my HD.  I've tried to do a DiskSalv Repair on it, and it seems to go past the checksum error block and lock up at the end of the disk blocks.  By lock up I mean I can't close DiskSalv when it gets that far and the program doesn't respond.

I hope this doesn't mean I need to reformat my partition.

Any help given would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks!

You could use a disk block editor to correct the checksum. This would probably lead to other errors, though.

You could also try to isolate the file containing the checksum error and use Detach (see Aminet) to delete it.

But the best way would really be to copy all files to another partition, format the erroneous partition and copy all files back. While you are at it, you should change the file system to PFS3 or SFS.

BTW, next time you decide to use DiskSalv, you should rather use salvage mode first if you want to keep your files. Any repair-in-place operation might delete important files because they are considered corrupt. Salvage might still rescue them, but not after a repair attempt.

Bye,
Thomas

I had that problem with DiskSalv locking up a few times and I would reboot and switch to Quarterback. It usually would also not be successful (fail somewhere in the process) but then running DiskSalv again would almost always fix my problem. Dunno why.

What is the best free filesystem for an A1200 with 3.0 kick and WB 3.1?

free! . . .SFS without any doubt!

Try is on a spare partition, tweek with SFSConfig to achieve the best prformances and when you will 100% sure . . . install it on the whole HD.

You will never come back :-)

@ Thomas
