OS4 and Amiga ONE - why?
« on: June 10, 2005, 01:38:06 PM »
Is this the end of Amiga? Is there anything special about OS4, Amiga ONE, Pegasos or what else there is currently out there? I guess my question is also, did Amiga die when Commodore turned the key back in the 90's.

The thing that's special about OS4/MOS/AROS is that they work exactly like AmigaOS... but on more modern/powerful hardware.

If you are happy/comfortable/used to AmigaOS they will provide a pleasing experience for you.

@cecilia
Nope, not the end yet. You know, you ask a friendly, you expect a friendly answer. I see that is too much to ask from you.

@everybody
See the thing is, I have trouble finding a store that has a demo machine. The only thing I have seen so far is a fuzzy video of OS4 taken by somebody with a handheld camera.

I thought I have read something about here lately about the AmigaOne dying, but I guess I was wrong.

So, are people using a beta version of OS4 right now? No date on when the full version of OS will be released?

What about a .PDF file, how long does it take to load the viewer? Is Adobe Acrobat available?

The A1 is dying, as Mr. Eyetech himself conceded. There simply is no new design in the works, what you see is all you're going to get. AOS4 however is not dying, at least not as publically as the hardware it runs on. People are indeed using a beta version; the developer's version went gold last year, IIRC. I suspect (that is, s-u-s-p-e-c-t, as in 'my uninformed opinion', disclaimer, disclaimer) it will go gold for ordinary users before the year is over. But as cecilia already indicated, people who use it are enthusiastic, and that's a good sign.

@ riccofl

I would wait until OS4 is Final and runs on better hardware than the current AmigaONE but I doesnt look like that there will be a new AmigaONE version soon.

AmiPDF opens in about 1-2 seconds.
A 14.7 MB LEGO construction plan of 85 pages opens in about 5 seconds from RAM-disk
Not really interesting, but it`s there.
