How to make 1200/600 2.5 to 3.5 HD cable adaptors
« on: June 07, 2005, 06:36:37 AM »
How do I make an IDE cable to switch from 2.5 to 3.5. I realize that 4 of the 44 wires does not get used because they are power, and I know which ones not to use, I just need to know where the other 40 wires end up on the 3.5 side of things.

Also where do you get crimping tools and IDE ribbons for this sort of job. As you can see, the {bleep}s on Ebay think that charging $20.00 for a simple 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor for the 1200 is justified. LAME!

You can get the parts at any good electronics supply place.  But, beware that because there is a difference in the spacing on the 44pin you'll have to do some hand wiring to get everything lined up correctly.

It's much easier to just buy an adapter or cable premade (same place that sells the parts will have them).

Examples (forget eBay, you don't need an "Amiga" cable)
44pin to 40pin 9" cable

44pin to 40pin molded adapter

Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Or if you do really want to make one yourself, it's just a matter of connecting wires 1-40 from the 2.5" connector to 1-40 on the 3.5" connector.

Wires 41-44 on the 2.5" connector are power supply and are not used.
For power to the 3.5" drive, it's best to solder wires directly to the back of the computer's power input socket.

For crimping tools, I've always used a small engineers vice and never had any problems.

As mentioned, the cable pitch between the connectors are different, so you need to solder all 40 joints by hand in order to connect the two different pitch cables.

Ok, I ripped apart and old HD cable and tossed one together, lining up pin for pin I.E. 1 to 1, 2 to 2 and so forth. I cut off the power cables as I'll be using an external case for now.

Everything boots up fine, now what software do I need for WB 3.1 to recognize the CD-ROM?

Hmm, well I did not have my CD-ROM cable plugged in fully, that's why it was booting off the hard drive with ZERO problems.
So I adjusted it. Turned on The CD-ROM, turned on the Amiga, then watched the screen as it sat forever in blackness.

I then Turned off the CD-ROM, booted the Amiga, same thing.

I then unplugged my CD-ROM, turned on the Amiga, now it does not detect a Hard Drive what so ever!!!!

I'm going broke FAST, if my freaking Amiga's IDE port just blew out, I'm going to be pissed!

----
EDIT
---

Plugged in external 12Gb HD, along with 1. 7Gb internal.

Now it detects the HD again, at least the HD light lights up. But HDTools sees them not. So I unplugged the external HD, rebooted my Amiga, and now the single HD funtions once more.

So does this mean HD Tools could not see them because it does not support modern 6+Gb HD's?
