A2630 and serial port questions
« on: June 06, 2005, 08:16:06 PM »
Hi, I'm new to Amigas as just last month I got an A2000. It came with kickstart 3.1 in ROM, a GVP SCSI controller with 4MB of RAM installed, and workbench 3.1 on a 165MB harddrive.

I installed a Mitsumi D359T2 floppy drive from my pile of PC spare parts and transfered the terminal program AZComm to the Amiga. Then I could transfer files at 19.2Kbps with no trouble.

Later I installed a second harddrive and an A2630 with 4MB. I removed the 4MB of RAM from the GVP card because it didn't seem to want to boot with the RAM on the A2630 enabled at the same time (is it possible or desirable to have both 32-bit and 16-bit fastRAM installed?)

Now when I try to transfer files over the null modem cable I get errors galore (mostly CRC). It seems that every time the harddrive light blinks (every 8KB) there is another error and the packet has to be re-sent. I tried booting with the 68000 and there was no change. I also ran the program memcheck12 a few times and all the memory passed.

Plus 19.2Kbps is a little on the slow side, is there a faster way?

Lastly, can someone tell me how to accomplish the equivalent of "CD .." with the Amiga shell?

I don't know about the null-modem transfers, but the A2630 uses 16-bit RAM, like the GVP board, so you're limited to 8MB, I'm afraid. I had such a setup myself before.

I think there is a patch you have to install, forget the name of it.  GVP serial or some similar name.

As to CD...

Might be CD / or \.  Don't really remember.  Experiment.

Or just type the name of the root dir, ie: Work:  CD became sort of obsolete around the time of OS2.0.  You don't need to use the CD command, you can type boot:system/toys/mytoy to get to that directory without using the CD in front of the path.

heh, I didn't think to try CD / owing to its function under unix/msdos

now about the patch, do you know any more details on that? I found this page http://www.gvp-m.com/updatejapan.html and looked through some of the archives but didn't see anything that looked helpful. My controller card is the A4008.

hmmm... and the RAM on the A2630 is only 16-bits wide? :( what about the expansion connectors on the back of the card?

BTW I tried saving files to the RAM disk under AZComm and there aren't any errors in that case.

Yes, there's a connector for a 32-bit RAM board, but they're extremely rare and cost more than a complete A4000T PPC setup! (Slight exaggeration.)
