A1000 and adIDE2 help
« on: June 05, 2005, 03:56:13 AM »
Greetings!  I'm trying to install a hard drive in my A1000.  I have the ICD adIDE kit and an IBM Travelstar (2.5") 6 gig drive from an old laptop.  The system boots fine with the adIDE and cable installed, but as soon as I try and boot with the drive plugged into the cable, the machine won't boot...the bios won't even post.  The red power led comes up, but the screen stays black.  I tried jumpering +5 volts from the diode behind the parallel port to pin 49 of the 68000 to be sure that there was sufficient power to the drive, but it did not help.  Any thoughts/info/insights would be appreciated.

Perhaps check the drive for a jumper?

It looks like it shouldn't have one installed to be master.  Other than that I'm now familiar with the AdIDE2 specific to the A1000.  Perhaps try a smaller drive if all else fails?

Good Luck

The drive is unsupported by the AdIDE as it is too new/large.  It is reported the max size it can do is 2.1GB.  Try a smaller HD.

Where can I get some inexpensive internal IDE interfaces for the A1000?  Or SCSI for that matter?

I got my AdIDE2 and Novia kit from ebay for around $40.  Installed it in a A500 and it works great!

Hey Tj in Mt. Rainier Land,

What is that expansion card connected to the RAM expansion board?

I thought it might be too large, but I wouldn't have thought that too large a drive would prevent the bios from posting.  I'll have a look around and see if I can find a smaller 2.5" drive.

Ugh...been building/repairing too many pc's lately...I assure you that I have linux (SuSE) on every intel box I own (though the one has windows as well for gaming...).

If it helps, I had to creatively alter my college computer desk to make room for my first amiga...it was too long for the hutch as it was an a1000, starboard II, and sidecar 1060 (with 10MB hard drive!).  I actually had installed a csa accelerator in that box, but had to remove it because the 1060 was so timing dependent that the accelerator effectively killed it.  My next amiga was an A500 with the Bodega Bay expansion chassis (again, too big for the desk!).  Several 2000s followed...never had a 4000 though...and I kinda want an AmigaOne or Pegasos...but man are they pricey...

Regardless, I'll try a smaller drive (just picked one up off ebay) and see if that helps.

I know, I'm just kidding.  It's easy to get in a particular mindset when you're surrounded by other types of machines... Can't tell you how many times I've tried "copy #?" on a PC...

Good luck!

It's a Baseboard 4MB, so I have 1MB Chip and 3.5MB Fast.  Just enough for a HD on a A500.

Cool!  I've got a Spirit Insider w/1.5MB of RAM in mine.  I love the old beast.  I had an AdIDE2 in mine as well.  I spliced the power cable that goes to the floppy to power the 3.5" hard drive.  Alas, I sold the AdIDE2 recently as I've got no time to play with the A1000 anymore!  {sob}

Cool!  Hey how was the intall in the A1000?  Did you need to do a lot of grounding mods?  How about the LED was that setup?  Mine has the LED working with the drive LED! It's awesome!

Hi,

Sorry... Typed Insider, meant InBoard.  It's the InBoard 1000 which is RAM expansion and nothing but.  The Insider - wasn't that the replacement for the entire motherboard?

This one was easy - two jumpers to two PALs on the Kickstart daughter board.  I did the PAL ground mod anyway, as I had lots of stuff off of the side.  Still works great, however the RAM is mapped into the wrong memory space and I can't get any kickloaders to work... drat.  As I said, not enough time to play anymore.

I put up an A1000 keyboard cable on my eBay auctions in case you needed one BTW.  I know alot of people who have stretched the living snot out of theirs, I can't believe this one made it coming up to 20 years and it still looks great!

Did you remove the A1000 shielding to make room for a 3.5 inch drive or is there enough squeeze room?
